Sleep or Insomnia Counselling in Bramhall
Often our anxieties and difficulties can weigh us down and we are unable to find a way forward. Perhaps we experience intrusive anxious thoughts or our inner critic is just too loud and holds us back. Maybe we keep repeating the same unhelpful behaviour again and again. Or perhaps past trauma feels too present and we are still experiencing its physical and emotional impact and the way it makes us behave. Our thoughts and feelings can be confusing and talking to friends and relatives may be too difficult. I provide a safe, respectful space in which you can explore your difficulties, gain insight and discover a way forward.

Because the foundations of security begin in relationship and specifically, the first relationship we experience with our primary caregivers. I believe in the importance of relationship within the therapeutic setting. You will have the opportunity to examine how you relate to yourself internally and with others interpersonally. We will look at present-day relationships as well as childhood influences, and how these impact on the formation of self. Safety, care and compassion are my guiding principals when working therapeutically.

You may be someone who has always managed. You get on with things, think your way through problems and are often the person others rely on. But something has changed. Perhaps you feel exhausted, overwhelmed or unlike yourself. Something from the past may still affect you, or you may find yourself repeating patterns you understand but cannot seem to change. You might be struggling after trauma, loss or a difficult relationship, or simply wondering why life feels harder than it used to. You may have reached the point where coping is no longer enough.

Distress can express itself in many ways: through our bodies, emotions, minds, and in our relationships. Sometimes we can readily name the cause; at other times, it may take the form of conflicts that are harder to name, but no less real.
In my work, I meet people grappling with many such concerns: difficulties in relationships, the legacies of trauma, questions of identity, employment difficulties, illness, or simply unhappiness that feels too much to bear.

How effective is treatment for insomnia?
The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.
Are there specific medications for sleep problems?
There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.
Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?
There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.
What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?
Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
