I'm trained and experienced in helping all kinds of people who are struggling with their mental health, and in gently assisting them in their search for the roots of those feelings. I also work closely with LGBTQ+ folk, and with those who are and/or love neurodivergent people. I'm trauma-informed and I strive to practice in an anti-discriminatory, anti-oppressive and culturally competent way. I use your own values and beliefs as our reference points during therapy, so that we can safely explore what's going on for you from the only appropriate context: your own.

My particular interests are: helping men and women who have suffered trauma, from mental, physical and sexual abuse; and working with couples - around commmunication and relationship issues. Providing a safe, supportive space, I employ a Relational Approach, using the unique therapeutic relationship between me and each client as a way for us to mutually understand the personal dynamics of each person - how they interact with themselves, and with the world - and to help facilitate personal change. Through our therapeutic relationship we can help change patterns of thinking, feeling and behaviour causing pain and distress.

Deciding to have personal therapy is a huge decision. It is a big step to take towards working through any issues that one may have. "We cannot teach people anything; we can only help them discover it within themselves" (Galileo). My role as a therapist is to help you to discover yourself during our sessions, to help you to find answers to the many questions that you may have. To help you to develop an understanding of 'self', and to help you to identify any patterns or 'scripts' which you may have. As a therapeutic alliance we can set goals and work towards these goals during our sessions.

Let it be anxiety, depression, parenthood, general worries, grief or another specific theme that you have in mind, nothing is too little to be explored in therapy. Taking the first step towards entering therapy might not always be easy, being vulnerable in front of a stranger might be intimidating. My goal as a therapist is to give clients a safe, empathic, warm and non-judgemental space so that we can speak freely and you can have the psychological support you need, may this be in a short-term therapy concept or longer term.

Counselling can provide a place for honesty for all the battles in our heads, from medically diagnosed conditions, past trauma, sexual desire, issues of gender, to everyday compulsive negative thinking. Understanding our own experience, in a world that seems to change so rapidly, surrounded by seemingly limitless information that offers wholly contradictory explanations can leave us feeling isolated and overwhelmed. Finding, and maintaining, personal meaning amongst so much uncertainty is tough. Counselling can reduce anxiety and deepen understanding as we strive to create personal harmony with both internal and external tensions.

Life can throw so many different situations at each and every one of us. Sometimes those situations are too difficult to deal with and can be overwhelming. In those times, it can seem difficult to know who to talk to without feeling some sense of failure and possible shame, that you have not been able to do what others seem to be able to do so easily. Embarrassment may stop you from wanting to talk to family or friends or you may feel that you are not understood by those around you. This can increase a sense of isolation or loneliness creating more anxiety and possible depression.

Hi my name is Amy, I understand that seeking help can be scary, especially if you have felt let down in the past or you haven't ever opened up to anyone before. Healing takes time and I will be alongside you for as long as it takes to feel safe and secure in expressing difficult and painful life experiences and feelings. I won't ever try to force you to open up, sometimes I might suggest using creative tools to express how you feel if you are finding it hard to put things into words. My approach is tailored to you and what you are comfortable doing.

Life is full of its ups and downs, and during the difficult times it may feel, for some, that there is no one to turn to. It can be daunting asking for help and sometimes it feels like no one understands what we are going through. However this does not need to be the case, as you can get support and understanding through counselling. It's really about finding the right counselling relationships- if you've tried before and it didn't work... it was the wrong therapeutic realtionship- please don't give up, You are worth not giving up for.

I support clients who are experiencing anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties or who are struggling with a life event. The Cost of Living Crisis may have generated/intensified existing anxieties and difficulties for you and your relationships. I aim to build a therapeutic relationship with you that is unique to you and offers what you need. We would carefully work at a pace and depth governed by you, to explore coping strategies and understand what has gone on in the past, what is going wrong now and have the ultimate goal of empowering you to find greater control over your life and a different way forward to a better place.

How can I find a therapist in Bracknell?

Search for nearby therapists or counsellors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or postcode; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or postcode into the search bar.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online or over the phone can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counsellors are all licensed mental health professionals. In many countries, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counsellor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counsellors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counsellor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counselling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
