As well as offering general counselling in areas such as depression, anxiety, relationships etc, I specialise in offering counselling to stroke survivors, or those with a brain injury, or their carers.
I am a person-centred Counsellor and a registered member of the BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy). There are times in life when people can experience unmanageable or emotionally overwhelming feelings and behaviours or maybe a trauma that may persist even if there is support from friends and loved ones. I encourage my clients to fully explore their experiences and help them accept who they are and what is out of their personal control, so they can better understand their current situation and improve their lives.

They may appear fine on the outside while feeling anxious, exhausted, or deeply stuck underneath.
I bring several years of experience working with complex mental health needs and trauma, alongside over 20 years of remedial bodywork. That combination gives me a rare and deep understanding of how our experiences live not just in our minds, but in our bodies too. It means I can hold a genuinely safe and steady space for whatever you bring.

I aim to be open to your experience of yourself rather than a label of ‘ anxiety’ or ‘depression’ and so offer a free 20 minute telephone consultation as an opportunity for us to discuss working together.
Do you find yourself prioritising the external world and the needs of those around you? Perhaps you feel different to others or misunderstood in relationships? It may be you experience self-doubt, negative thinking or notice yourself repeating patterns that impact your relationships. Whatever is going on for you working together, relationally we can begin to explore ‘YOU’, focus on raising your awareness & understanding of the way you experience yourself, to identify your goals for therapy, to be open to learning new ways of being. Therapy is a commitment between client & therapist, to be open to wanting things to be different.

Perhaps you are feeling anxious, depressed or overwhelmed and finding it difficult to see a way forward.
As a relational counsellor I believe the therapeutic relationship is the key to helping you explore how past issues may be affecting your present. I will work with you at your own pace with compassion, to gain a better understanding of the source of your difficulties and work with you to understand how they may be impacting your current relationships.

You might feel alone carrying whatever it is - untangible, anxious, ashamed, or stuck in repeating patterns that leave you frustrated or disconnected.
I see clients online, with flexibility for shift workers, and in person with limited availability. My therapy is integrative and relational; there’s no “one-size-fits-all.” I draw on Psychodynamic, Existential, Attachment, CBT, Gestalt, Humanistic, and somatic theories to explore your story, untangle old patterns, and support new, healthier ways of relating.

The three issues I am most proficient in treating are anxiety, depression, and relationship difficulties
Having been in therapy myself for most of my life, I believe one size does not fit all. An authentic and collaborative approach is very important, and the Therapist's skill in considering the use and timing of different intervention tools adds to the process feeling really personal and bespoke. This is why I have chosen to be Integrative.

I work with adults who are struggling with a wide range of difficulties including depression, anxiety, personality disorders, bipolar disorder, trauma, bereavement and relationship struggles.
I work from a psychodynamic perspective and am equally comfortable in long- or short-term treatments. I have a deep interest in the story that lies behind each person’s life and work with my patients with curiosity and gentleness which allows them to feel at ease, but with enough directness, so that change and growth can occur.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

What are the most common types of treatment for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
