Let me start by saying I’ve been to see a psychologist; why mention this? Two reasons: firstly, people often ask me this, so I’ll be up front about it. Secondly – maybe why people ask – having been “on the other side of the room”, I have the experience of how hard opening up can be, and how difficult it is to think about “life”. This experience has meant that back on the psych side of the room, I take a genuinely careful and non-judgmental approach to sessions. I begin by focusing on helping people feel comfortable; paradoxically perhaps, this means we are able to get to work on things quite quickly, but importantly, never rushing.

Therapy can help with a number of issues, such as trauma, loss, bereavement, relationship difficulties, body image issues and eating distress, addiction and many other issues.
my work is guided by the belief that psychotherapy should be a safe, confidential and regular space in which to talk about feelings, experiences and difficulties, with a therapist you have developed a trusting therapeutic relationship with over time. Understanding how past experiences and relationships can impact on current difficulties can help a person better cope in the future. I provide a warm, empathic and safe proffessional service.

I work with people both short and long term and I have a particular interest in helping people to overcome the impact of trauma.
With over 20 years experience working in the mental health field, I have a wide variety of experience. Before starting in private practise, I worked for many years in the NHS and other similar organisations abroad, which has given me an excellent grounding in ensuring my practise is based on the best available evidence, and is both ethical and effective.

I've been working with people for over 20 years, joining them in sense-making journeys that allow them to live more content and meaningful lives. My focus is to help people explore their thoughts, emotions and past to alleviate difficult states or obstacles to their wellbeing. When people understand what drives their behaviour and reconnect with lost parts of themselves, they can reengage in positive relationships and feel they can own their life. Symptoms like anxiety, depression or a sense of futility and unhappiness are usually linked to past experience and therapy can facilitate a safe frame to revisit them.

I support adults experiencing anxiety, trauma, low self-esteem, neurodiversity-related challenges, and eating difficulties.
I have a special interest of helping adults who have unhelpful coping strategies that keep them stuck, such as eating too much or too little; drinking too much; withdrawing into themselves; &/or working harder to activate perfectionist & self-destructive behaviours. Perhaps you're questioning who you are as you struggle with such feelings & question if you'll ever feel better? Perhaps you struggle to find the right words to talk about how you're feeling & shut down if others ask how you are? You don't know where else to turn, struggle on & feel afraid of what may happen if you're not okay. You are exhausted & want things to change.

Since 1996 I have helped people to overcome the consequences of different types of trauma, including critical incidents, bereavement, loss, illness, and the enduring impact of adverse childhood experiences on adult life.
Finding the therapist that is right for you may feel a challenge, especially at a time when you may be feeling vulnerable or uncertain, perhaps facing a crisis point. This is not unusual, whether you have undertaken therapy in the past or whether this is the first time you have sought therapy. Sometimes we need help to overcome conflicts and blocks in ourselves and in our relationships that are confusing and difficult to face. I understand that you are a unique and complex individual, with many facets and aspects of who you are, how you experience yourself, and how you have had to adapt as you confront life's struggles.

I am experienced in working with trauma, dissociation, anxiety and post-traumatic stress, sexual violence and domestic abuse, low self esteem, depression, loss and grief.
There are times when many of us feel we could benefit from emotional support and although making that first step to see a counsellor can seem enormous, it is a really positive step as talking in confidence to a professional counsellor can help bring clarity and healing and give you much needed support during a painful or anxious time. Counselling can help you make sense of your emotions and responses and empower you to make changes in your life. It facilitates the freedom to talk openly and confidentially, in a place where you will be really listened to.

Trauma specialist.
My approach weaves together several therapeutic approaches, as one-size does not fit all, so that your therapy is built entirely around you. Sometimes it's trauma or PTSD with a clear cause. Sometimes it's anxiety that follows you everywhere, a low mood that won't lift, or a quiet but persistent feeling of not quite knowing who you are or what you deserve.

When should I seek treatment for trauma?
Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?
Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?
Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?
It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
