Are you feeling anxious, emotionally exhausted or struggling with a difficult life event? Perhaps you're dealing with grief, low self-esteem, relationship challenges or feel you've lost direction. I offer a supportive space where you can speak openly without fear of judgement. My person-centred approach places you at the heart of the counselling work. Together we can explore what's troubling you, identify unhelpful patterns, and build self-awareness in a way that feels right for you.

Whether you're facing a difficult period in life, struggling with anxiety or self-worth, working through the effects of trauma, or simply wanting to understand yourself better, therapy offers a space to slow down, make sense of what's happening and begin moving forward with greater clarity and compassion.
Hello, I'm Melanie. If you've found your way here, you may be feeling overwhelmed, emotionally exhausted or as though you're carrying more than you can manage on your own. Perhaps life has become more difficult recently, or maybe experiences from the past are continuing to affect how you feel today. Whatever has brought you here, you don't have to make sense of it alone. I believe therapy should feel like a safe, collaborative space rather than a process of being analysed or told what to do. Everyone experiences and processes the world differently. I offer a flexible, collaborative approach that respects each person's individuality.

I can imagine deciding whether you want to have therapy or need therapy is a big question. Perhaps you have suffered a loss, a trauma or are going through a transition of some kind and you want the space and time to work through it. Perhaps this emotional distress whether it be anxiety, low mood, is impacting on your relationships, work and your home life. It could be that you’ve tried many things and for some reason those old ways of coping that have done you well in the past just aren’t working anymore and you feel like you’re struggling. I provide evidence based psychological treatment that might help.

Before anything, I like to think of myself as a genuinely decent human being who also happens to be a therapeutic counsellor, CBT therapist and EMDR practitioner. In simple terms, I help people understand themselves and the difficulties they're experiencing. I work to help you make sense of how those difficulties developed, what keeps them going and how we can create meaningful, lasting change using approaches tailored to your needs.

I support clients experiencing trauma, anxiety, and low self-esteem.
You may appear to be coping on the outside, yet internally feel overwhelmed, anxious, low, or emotionally exhausted. Perhaps you are carrying the impact of trauma, loss, relationship difficulties, or a persistent sense that something is not quite right. Many of the people I work with are thoughtful and self-aware, yet tired of managing alone. Therapy offers a space to pause, understand what is happening beneath the surface, and begin to move forward with greater clarity.

Hi, thanks for being here! Let me tell you about myself: I am a queer cisgender woman, and I use she/her pronouns. I am also neurodivergent and an intersectional feminist. These parts of who I am naturally shape the way I work. My counselling practice is inclusive and rooted in compassion. I aim to offer a space where you will be seen, heard and accepted just as you are. Being queer and neurodivergent myself, I know what it can feel like to exist between worlds, to mask, to question belonging, and to be misunderstood. These experiences have inspired me to focus my practice on LGBTQIA+ and neurodivergent individuals.

Empathic and experienced psychotherapist and counsellor, based in the Bournemouth/Poole area. I work with individual adults of all ages and also within the LGBTQ+ community. My clients experience and bring a broad range of issues to therapy such as anxiety, identity issues, depression, relationship difficulties, and trauma. Trauma from our past often impacts our lives in the present and prevents us from moving forward or from being our authentic selves. Therapy cannot change the past, but it can enable us to move forward with increased resilience and can provide us with a solid foundation for lasting changes.

Self Esteem Counsellors
When should a person seek therapy for low self-esteem?
When self-esteem problems begin to disrupt the healthy daily functioning of an individual, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not engaging with friends for fear of being judged, not completing work assignments because they don’t think they’re capable, or not finding romantic love because they don’t feel they’re worthy of it, a therapist may be able to help.

What are the signs of low self-esteem?
Low self-esteem is a common issue that can affect a person's mental and emotional well-being. Some common signs of low self-esteem include negative self-talk, perfectionism, social anxiety, difficulty making decisions, an inability to set boundaries, people-pleasing, and others. A lack of belief in oneself or one’s abilities and a feeling of not being worthy or deserving underlie most of these characteristics.

What causes low self-esteem?
Feelings of low self-worth can begin in childhood or adulthood. Being raised by a highly critical parent or growing up feeling constant disapproval can stay with a person well into adulthood. Specific issues in adulthood may also be a cause of low self-esteem. An unhappy relationship, a dysfunctional work or school experience can impact a person’s feelings of self-worth.

How can therapy improve self-esteem?
Therapists can help identify negative thought patterns that keep the client stuck in a loop of destructive self-talk and develop coping skills to change the voice in their head. A therapist can help with goal-setting, so that clients are better able to stay on task and build confidence from successfully completing work they’re proud of. Coaching a client on how to better communicate can improve relationships. These skills can result in someone with low self-esteem feeling empowered and living with less fear.
