I enjoy working with both young people and adults, and I have often been described by clients as open, honest, and approachable—qualities they have consistently valued. I have a practical, logical mindset and enjoy problem-solving. Having lived in several different countries, I’ve gained valuable insight into the experiences of people from diverse cultures and backgrounds. I approach each person with curiosity and respect, asking questions to genuinely understand them rather than making assumptions. I believe my clients are the true experts in their own lives, and I see my role as guiding them toward a calmer, more balanced place.

I work with couples and individuals on a wide range of issues drawing on a range of approaches including CBT, Person Centred, Emotion Focused Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy and Life Skills Coaching methods.
It can be a great relief to be able to share your worries and stress with someone. We all struggle at times and as much as we would like to talk to our friends or family we feel unable to let them in. Sometimes we feel stuck, alone and not able to find the solution to the problem that's making us unhappy. Being able to talk openly with someone who can support you, without judgement, as you explore your feelings and the circumstances that are causing you stress can make a big difference. You will start to feel in control, see things more clearly and feel more confident to make the changes you want to in your life.

Hi, my name is Sophie Smith, I am a therapeutic counsellor and supervisor. I am a registered member of the NCPS (National counselling and psychotherapy society ). I am currently only able to offer telephone or online sessions. I like to work with clients who are willing to be open minded to the counselling process. I enjoy working with a wide range of issues and if a client has a goal in mind we can look to achieve this. For example, you may be suffering from day-to-day anxiety, or perhaps you have experienced traumatic life events leading to depression, addictive behaviours or problems in your relationships.
When we work together, I offer you a safe space where we can explore your thoughts, feelings and behaviours that underpin the issues in your life. Often, we develop negative coping mechanisms in reaction to life events. When we start to recognise how these patterns play out in the present, we can begin to realise that we have the autonomy to change them.

If you feel a deep sense that something in your life isn’t quite right — you may feel stuck, overwhelmed, or emotionally disconnected, often shaped by early experiences or unresolved trauma. You need a safe, compassionate space to explore your inner world, understand your patterns, and reconnect with your true self. Your goal is to heal, grow, and live more authentically and peacefully, because you long to feel whole, connected, and truly alive.

Couples Counselling

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
