As a Chartered Counselling Psychologist, and associate of the British Psychological Society with many years experience in the NHS and in private practice, I aim to offer a low cost, low-stress service, which is both friendly and accessible. My training initially as a psychotherapist enables me to offer long term and short term work. I can offer Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Psychodynamic , and Humanistic therapy. I like to tailor my approach to individual needs and according to the evidence base. I cover all the major issues and many more and offer concessions to students and unwaged folks. I also run supervision groups.

My experience is in working with both adults and adolescents aged 15-18, using the psychodynamic model as a foundation, although I may draw upon other models for the most helpful solution.
Are you struggling with issues and can't see which way to turn? Feeling overwhelmed? Facing life-changing situations? I am a Psychotherapeutic Counsellor, working in private practice providing face-to-face, telephone and online individual counselling. Counselling provides a safe and confidential space into which you can bring issues which may be leaving you struggling, anxious and conflicted. Talking to someone outside your immediate circle, who can offer an objective perspective on your situation, can help you to feel heard, recognise patterns of behaviour, and work things through without fear of reprisal, judgement or guilt.

My work is based on a psychodynamic approach to therapy although I may draw on other modalities if useful.
We all have times when life seems challenging or our past catches up with us. This can be an overwhelming and isolating experience and I believe that to navigate through these periods, we need to find a space for ourselves and a supportive, open and constructive setting. I offer a safe, friendly, professional environment that challenges and supports you as we work together to process your thoughts, feelings and fears. I strive to help you achieve a sense of relief and well-being, as well as presenting you with the opportunity to work towards change and understanding.

Sometimes it can feel as though you are in a never-ending loop, repeating unhelpful and negative patterns of behaviour which damage your feelings of self-worth and value. I can support you by enabling you to understand your behaviour patterns through exploring your emotions, anxieties and any past or present trauma. We will work through any old and unhelpful perspectives and feelings about yourself and your life, enabling you to make positive changes - putting the pieces of your puzzle back together, leading you to loving your life and accepting every aspect of it. This might be one of the most important journeys you will ever make.

In my experience people can struggle to cope with how they feel. They don't know why they feel how they do, they don't know how to change it, and often they have tried so many different avenues of help. What I offer is someone who tries to hear what you are saying, who allows you to say things, who tries to reflect back to you the emotions that I hear - often a whole mixture of emotions. I offer myself as someone who wants to be part of your journey, someone who gets it wrong sometimes but tries to get it right. I am interested in working with dreams and with the body. You can see more on the blogs that I have posted on my website.

Life can throw many challenges at us, and whilst we may often cope well, we sometimes need a little support from someone unrelated to our lives. This is where effective counselling, tailored to the individual or couple, has its place. I am experienced via the NHS, charities and private practice in helping individual and couple clients explore a wide range of personal and relationship issues. I specialise in working with trauma, sex offending issues, sex and pornography addictions and other paraphilias. I offer a totally non-judgmental, confidential space to safely explore your current difficulties.

Seeking support through counselling is a big first step to take and I can be there to help and support you with this. I use a warm and empathic approach as an integrative therapist combining different elements of therapy to create a safe and confidential space from which you can explore any issue that may be concerning you. Building on the foundation of this will help us to explore what you are seeking help with and to hopefully assist better understanding of the issue that you are bringing. I believe that you are the expert and have the answers and solutions to your issues

Psychodynamic counselling will give you further insight into the roots of your struggles e.
I will listen to whatever you choose to bring without judgement. There are times in life when things are feeling difficult, worrying, upsetting and even impossible to manage. It may feel daunting thinking about sharing something with me that you have been carrying around, all on your own perhaps. But ask yourself - what will you feel like once that weight has lifted?

My name is Marie Watkins. I am a counselling psychotherapist with 20 years of experience working in a variety of settings. I work with individuals offering short term, solution focused and longer term open ended therapy. In my own life I have experienced life events and challenges that have left me feeling overwhelmed, confused, lost and defeated. To have a sense of the way forward has felt, at these times, almost impossible. Modern day life can leave us all struggling to balance work, family and relationships resulting in us experiencing feelings of failure, self doubt and lack of confidence.

Psychodynamic Counsellors

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
