We are trained within the humanistic approach of person centred counselling with further training in mental health, sexual abuse, suicide, substance abuse, domestic violence, child protection and safeguarding.
It can be hard to reach out for professional support. Counselling Connection has designed its service to connect you to a small team of qualified therapists who may work in different ways but all have the same goal: to support you on your journey. If you don't "click" with the first counsellor you see, you are encouraged to meet with another member of our team so that you don't have to go back to square one in your search for a counsellor.

Is life overwhelming and you need to talk to someone? Maybe you need help to develop coping strategies for your anxiety? Whatever challenges you are are facing, I offer a confidential and supportive space to explore your feelings. Being heard and seen in this space, without judgement can be deeply healing. I won't give advice but I won't sit and say nothing either. Instead, I will ask questions and offer other perspectives, enabling you to consider your troubles in depth, and giving you an opportunity to explore what you can do to move forward. I can also suggest ways to help manage panic attacks, and feelings of anxiety and anger.

Do worries keep you up at night? Do you get churned up by upsetting memories? Do you feel so sad and tired that all you want to do is stay in bed? Do you feel different, isolated, with no one to understand you? Do you often give up on your needs because someone else’s seem more important? How would your life be different if you felt calmer, more energised, happier in relationships or okay with treating yourself with the same care as you do others? It may be hard to believe that change is possible, but with the right help, it is. As your counsellor, I'm here to listen, support, and cheer you on your journey to a more fulfilling life.

Throughout our lives we may encounter challenging experiences. We may feel lost and lack the guidance and clarity to assist in making difficult choices. We may struggle to deal with the affliction of loss or bereavement. We may find it difficult to understand the sensations and emotions attached to trauma and relational conflicts. We may be unsure of our identity and how we fit within the world.

People come to therapy for many different and important reasons. For some it is to discuss difficult and emotional experiences, while for others its to have a space in their week to reflect and make time to check-in with themselves. I ask all my clients to come with an open-mind as therapy can take you on a journey of self-discovery. I have worked with many clients with varying degrees of personal difficulties; severe and mild distress including depression, anxiety, suicide, low-self-esteem, earlier life trauma, PTSD, relational difficulties and many more.

Though I work with people who have experienced a broad range of emotional and psychological difficulties and trauma, I have particular interest in working with bereavement and loss (including the loss of a loved one to suicide); women’s issues (including fertility/infertility, miscarriage, peri/menopause); and relationship problems (including domestic abuse).
Hello, I’m Tonia, a relational psychotherapist trained in Transactional Analysis(TA). The decision to go to therapy is never an easy one. Approaching someone you don’t know to share intimate details about painful subjects can feel daunting. However, please be reassured, I am an experienced, warm, and empathic practitioner who is open minded and nonjudgmental. I offer a safe and totally confidential space for us to work closely together to help you understand yourself and your relationships better, and to explore what may be going on behind the difficult emotions, thoughts and behaviours troubling you.

Suicidal Ideation Counsellors

How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?

Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioural therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioural, dialectical behaviour, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioural and dialectical behaviour therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.

Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?

The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
