I specialise in Addictions and Substance Misuse being an area that I have worked in for many years and have a great understanding.
Many people know that they want to speak with a therapist, but are a afraid that their 'stuff' might shock or hurt them. PLEASE trust me - I do understand how awful life can be, how cruel some people can be, how we do things to survive that we wish we hadn't. Try me - you will find that I am not going to be shocked or hurt, and that I can listen with understanding, warmth and without judgment, for as long as it takes to put your demons to rest and move on with your life.

We will discover where this confusion arises in the body and mind and begin to understand where it began: Perhaps this has been triggered in the past: by an environment, people, a person, upbringing etc. The work we do is compassionate and kind. My purpose is to help you find your way out of the confusion and suffering, so you can find purpose, meaning and peace in your life.

You may be feeling stuck in patterns of anxiety, overwhelm, or low mood, or noticing how past experiences continue to affect your relationships, emotions or sense of safety. Trauma can leave the nervous system feeling constantly on edge, disconnected or caught in responses that are hard to shift alone. Therapy can offer a space to slow down, gently understand what’s happening beneath the surface and begin to feel safer and more grounded in yourself.

I offer brief or long-term therapy to clients from all walks of life, supporting a wide range of issues including: addiction, alcoholism, anxiety, anger, relationships, identity crisis, life changes, self-esteem, stress, and loss of confidence.
Some people come to therapy with a specific ‘presenting issue’ that they wish to discuss, explore and resolve. Others are not so sure what it is that troubles them - but they do know that change of some sort is vital, and they would like that change to occur sooner rather than later. Some people come to therapy with great enthusiasm. Others (particularly those who see themselves as ‘fighters’ or ‘succeeders’) might feel embarrassed at the prospect of admitting their stuckness. Whatever your current life situation, allow me to reassure you that change is not only possible, but can often occur in just a few sessions.

If any of this sounds familiar, then together we'll look to identify the feelings, beliefs and memories that are specific to you, and find ways you can respond to these leaving you feeling calm, self-compassionate and more resolved.

Are you feeling stuck, overwhelmed by loss, or struggling with, anxiety, depression, shame, relationships or addiction?
My initial training was in person-centred counselling, followed by training in addiction psychology, integrative psychotherapy, psychoanalytic studies, couples counselling, and European philosophy. I hold these approaches lightly, allowing me to listen openly and respond to each person as an individual, rather than being bound by any one way of thinking.

You thought things would feel easier by the time you reached this age. Maybe life wasn't supposed to be this hard. You figured you'd feel more settled, more confident, more in control. But instead, something just feels… off. You're tired. Anxious. Like you're stuck, and no matter what you do, it's hard to move forward. You know you want more from life, you know you're capable of more, but it's hard to explain. You might feel disconnected from yourself or the people around you. Maybe your relationships are struggling, or you just don’t feel like yourself anymore. You're not alone. I'm here for you if you decide to reach out.

What is the best therapy for addiction?
Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.

How long does therapy for addiction take?
There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.

How effective is drug addiction treatment?
Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.

How can you get addiction treatment for someone?
The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
