More and more people are finding that counselling can help them discover their own path or journey through what can seem like a maze of issues, decisions and choices. It can help them to understand what is happening in relationships at difficult times so that they can regain a sense of meaning, balance and control in their lives.

From behaviour, emotion, learning, social difficulties, crisis, sensory and much more.
Hi my name is Sam. I work with children and young people. My focus when working with children and young people is to find a way to work with them to help with all of their areas of difficulty, from emotional to school and the variety of difficulties they can experience. I find that children and young people feel most comfortable in a familiar surrounding so I always try to work with the child in their own home or school.

Hi my name is Dawn. I have been a Counselling Professional since 2005. I have a lived experience of depression and life and how we build building blocks, one upon the other, carrying all these blocks within us and how we need to release these blocks. I have a depth of experience both professionally and personally especially with mental health issues with children and adults. I live in reality and know the depths of pain that we can hold inside and the depths of pain this has on those around us. I also know the beauty that acceptance of this pain leads to and the creativity, the freeing and the emergence of you really are.

Welcome. Whatever has brought you to scroll these profiles, the right therapeutic relationship can help you be heard, seen and understood. The journey often starts in a place of discomfort: anxiety, bereavement, feeling lost, stuck or frustrated with repeated patterns of behaviour that you can't seem to shift (in life and relationships), physical or mental health problems or the pain of old wounds that haven't healed. These crisis moments are often a call to personal growth and development, and sometimes to find a new path in life. I can offer you a safe and non-judgemental space to explore your situation and begin to move forward.

I offer a free 20-30 minute consultation prior to a first session to explore how you feel about working together. I work with people who wish to delve deeper into their experiences and want to uncover patterns which are no longer helping them. I work relationally, meaning I use our relationship as way to explore each clients unique way of being in relationships. Sometimes we can arrive at rigidly painful beliefs about ourselves and the world we live in. Existential therapy can be a way to disrupt these beliefs and change the way we see the world and ourselves in it.

How effective is treatment for learning disabilities?

When initiated early and tailored to a child’s specific needs, learning disability treatment can be quite effective at helping a child cope with their disability, though its exact efficacy may depend on the severity of symptoms and whether comorbid disorders exist. Less is known about treatment initiated in adulthood, but it is certainly possible that an adult with a learning disability will see some improvement—or at the very least, identify workarounds and accommodations that could make symptoms less burdensome in day-to-day life.

When should someone seek treatment for learning disabilities?

It’s best to seek treatment as early as possible. Because learning disabilities often go unnoticed until a child starts school, or even until they’re a few years along, regular check-ins with teachers and doctors can help parents determine whether children are meeting milestones and keeping up with peers or whether an evaluation for learning disabilities may be warranted. And although earlier is always better, it’s never too late to be evaluated for learning disabilities and to seek treatment.

What happens if learning disabilities are left untreated?

Undiagnosed and untreated learning disabilities can be a source of significant frustration and shame for a child, who may feel that their challenges stem from a lack of intelligence or willpower. Such feelings can trigger low self-esteem, depression, or anxiety, which may push a child toward risky behaviors, including substance use. In adulthood, untreated learning disabilities can interfere with career success, and lingering feelings of self-doubt and shame can negatively affect someone’s mental health.

Are there medications for learning disabilities?

Currently, there are no medications designed to treat specific learning disabilities such as dysgraphia or dyscalculia. However, someone with a learning disability may be prescribed medication for a comorbid condition, such as anxiety, depression, or ADHD, which may have positive downstream effects on their learning disability; for example, a child with both ADHD and dyslexia may find that they’re better able to focus on their reading exercises after being prescribed a stimulant medication.
