I have been a healer for nearly 40 years and have worked with people with physical illness and mental pain, and those seeking meaning in life and asking spiritual questions.
Working as a Jungian Psychotherapist, Integrative Counsellor, healer and Reiki Master means I work holistically. Every aspect of you is included in therapy - mental, physical, emotional, and at the soul level. When we get in touch with unconscious motives and drivers, and how they manifest as behaviours, we are able to make different choices and to be more of our true selves. I have run my private practice for 12 years & am a member of the British Association of Counselling & Psychotherapy and Ayanay Psychological Accreditation.

I am a qualified in EMDR and Trauma-focused CBT, working with Autism and ADHD, amongst other therapies and have considerable training and experience managing traumatic presentations stemming from adverse life experiences and also specialise in treating the psychological effects of serious or terminal illness.
I believe that we all deserve to have the chance to be the best that we can be and live a life that is meaningful and enjoyable. That means different things to different people: therapy needs to be offered in a way that is relevant to you as an individual, helps you tell your story and be supported. This is true even if your life is foreshortened by illness.

You’ve done what you had to do to get through the pain — pushed it down, talked yourself out of it, minimized it, kept going when everything inside you was saying stop.
Real talk — no sugarcoating, no hiding behind therapeutic jargon. A safe, grounded space where you don’t have to explain everything or protect me from your story. A flexible, integrative approach that meets you where you are — emotionally, somatically, and psychologically.

I also use mindfulness, breathing and creative techniques, where appropriate, to support my clients with being present in the moment and transform the way they relate to and manage emotional and/or physical pain.
Whether you are dealing with a specific issue or just have that feeling something isn’t right, therapy can be a powerful tool to explore your thoughts and make positive changes. There isn’t anybody that couldn’t benefit from an hour a week, dedicated to them, especially at times when life feels too much to handle on our own. My top priority as a therapist is to create a safe space where you can explore your thoughts, feelings and emotions without judgement. Being seen, believed and supported can help enormously. I also draw on embodied approaches to trauma, which means I use the body as a tool for deeper self-awareness.

It provides a space to creatively shape your life but also take your pain and struggle seriously.
In the first few sessions, we will think together about what's going on in your life now within the context of past experiences. This is also the time to discuss how therapy can help and to identify important patterns and underlying beliefs which shape your life. Mind/ body approaches to stress and trauma are an important aspect of my approach.

Chronic Pain Counsellors

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophising, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
