I offer therapy for clients struggling with the effects of negative events (often traumatic) from their past. These events can affect our sense of agency and relationship with safety, both with ourselves and others, as well as carry the symptoms of low mood, anxiety, and reduced concentration. I believe that our relationship experiences affect how we interpret negative events, and that effective therapy should include how our attachments provide a deeper understanding into how we manage adversity.

Life throws us challenges that are tough to get through! Sometimes we just need someone to talk to - Someone to listen - Someone, to help us to make sense of what is happening or has happened in our lives now and most importantly how we can move forward… Making that first step to access support and be willing to share your thoughts, feelings and ideas with another person is a brave and responsible act. It's also a positive move towards helping you ease some of the wobbles, struggles and conflicts you may be having, and demonstrates a capacity to think which is essential in making your life more in line with

Firstly, from one hu man being to another, I would like to say how proud I am of you for looking for some support. It's not easy to admit when we might need some help, or to actively seek it out. It's a really big step. Take your time, you're in control of what happens next, so do things at your own pace. Trauma can have such an impact on every part of our lives. It's never easy, but taking the control back and facing your experiences head on may be the best way to start your healing. You don't have to do this alone. I would really like to help you on your journey to a happier and more fulfilling life.

Welcome,     I'm Rizwan. I am a qualified counsellor and psychotherapist here to help you.   I believe the path to positive change is easier when you have the right support in place. That’s why I take a person-centred approach to therapy, where your voice and concerns are the focus of the therapy. This may seem obvious at first look, but it means that the support you receive will be tailored for your needs. It also means is that your life will be at the forefront of all our conversations, because when you have someone working with you, making sure your voice is heard and your needs are met, life is much is easier to live.

I am located in Manchester City Centre (Corn Exchange) and offer sessions in-person, online or by phone.
So often clients' unhelpful experiences of therapy are attributed to their therapist being "silent", "difficult to connect with" or (at worst) "like a brick wall". The psychologically informed, dedicated and authentic experience I deliver requires me to be active, present and, primarily, something resembling an authentic hu man being whom I hope you will trust and feel at ease with. You will have the time and space to talk (without awkward silences!) and where desired, I can share with you knowledge/theory acquired from 10 years clinical experience, to help us collaboratively explore, enlighten and enhance your lived experience.

I provide a supportive environment in which we can explore together the difficulties that you're experiencing without any judgement. Life can be tough, and change can be hard. We often get fused to unwanted thoughts, beliefs, and struggle with them. We can often feel despair and a sense of hopelessness. I help people realise that unwanted thoughts, feelings, and circumstances can, and do, change, and help people make positive differences in their life.

There are many reasons why we seek therapy and would like someone to talk to.
My approach is hu man centred, compassion focused, and trauma informed. I believe that every person is shaped by their life experiences and has their own unique strengths and challenges. As such, I do not use symptom lists, diagnostic labels, or manualised treatments. If you are looking for a therapist who works in this way, I may not be the best practitioner to support your needs. We will begin by exploring together what brings you to therapy and creating a shared understanding of your unique life story. From here, we can begin to make connections between your history and your present difficulties, whatever they may be.

During these times we may feel overwhelmed, lost and confused and we may not know what to do. Whatever it is that you are struggling with right now, your mental health is important and talking with an experienced counsellor or psychotherapist can help.

Male Counsellors

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
