I believe therapy can be a transformative experience. Whether you have recently been through a difficult or traumatic experience, are feeling lost, low, are struggling with negative self-image, or you just feel it may be helpful to have a space to untangle your thoughts and develop a deeper understanding of yourself, I can hold a safe and non-judgemental space for you. My work is integrative (meaning I draw from different therapy theories), and is client-centred, at your pace, gentle and compassionate.

Are you struggling with a current issue, past trauma or on-going difficulties and looking for a safe therapeutic relationship to support you? I can work alongside you whilst you tend to emotional wounds and grow self-compassion. You may bring awareness to your internal processes and how these affect your relationship with yourself and others. You may feel less stuck in repetitive patterns and behaviours. Psychotherapy can be a place to grow a sense of inner intuition and develop the connection between mind and body. I offer an empathic, warm and non-judgmental space for you to explore whatever is happening in your life.

People may choose to speak to a counsellor because they feel they cannot speak to their other half/friends/ family about such personal issues, or they may simply wish to speak to a professional with an objective viewpoint.
Before I tell a little about myself, allow me to say, well done for getting this far! I appreciate that many people become a little anxious at the prospect of an intense atmosphere in a counselling room. Thats not how I work though. My first aim is to help you relax. To see that yes, it is a 'safe and confidential environment for you to talk about anything that you want'. But there's no need for it to be a heavy and intense atmosphere either. I believe we can be practical, pragmatic and make some real changes without sacrificing empathy or compassion.

I am a qualified and UKCP-registered Family Therapist - we are also known as ‘Systemic Psychotherapists’, because we think about ‘systems’ such as families, couples and groups/teams.
As family therapists we work with families (in whatever shape or form), couples, but also individuals, to think about the complex networks of relationships we live in. We have conversations with you about what is going well within those relationships, what you might like to be different and what you would like your relationships to look like going forwards.

Helping you to understand your needs and your communication style, I can support you to build more effective and rich relationships with your friends, family and loved ones.
If you have experienced trauma as a result of your past and you find that is affecting you and your relationships in the present, I can help you gently explore these difficulties and support you to make the changes you need to make. Through childhood experiences and life events we try to fit into the world we live in. From very early on we tend to adapt ourselves to meet the needs of others, to be loved, liked and accepted. We twist and manage ourselves into expected ways of being and mask what is really going on for us. In doing this we lose the sense of who we are before we ever know.

In recent years I have moved my work focus to integrating Internal Family Systems (IFS) as I find this way of working empowering to the client, engaging and highly effective.
IFS is here to examine the parts of you that hold anxiety, grief, anger, addiction and trauma. It is a way of really getting to know your inner world. It is proven (backed up by neuroscience) and evidence based. It can be sometimes fun, as well as deep and trauma aware. I am happy to work with a number of different disciplines according to your needs.

I'm fully accredited in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and trained in EMDR and Trauma-Focused CBT, with Internal Family Systems (IFS) next.
Hi, I’m so glad you’re here. Maybe you’ve been holding it together for a long time, pushing through, keeping busy, looking after everyone else. But underneath, things feel numb or too much. You’re tired, overwhelmed, unsure who you even are anymore. Maybe the anxiety, stress or ups and downs are getting harder to ignore. I love working with people who have reached that point. The ones who are ready to stop pretending and start figuring out what they actually need. Therapy with me at The Self Discovery Project is a deep dive. It’s thorough, creative and empowering. We get to the roots and help you feel more like you again.

I work with clients who may be struggling with anxiety and depression, due to past traumas, related to family or relationships.
Hello, I’m Jodie, I work as an integrative counsellor that uses psychodynamic, cognitive behaviour and humanistic approaches. Reaching out for support is hard, but this can be the first step in trying to move forward at a time when things can feel stuck and hopeless. I work to try to help you understand yourself and your past in a supportive way and at a pace that you feel comfortable with. In order to change patterns of behaviour it helps to understand yourself in a supportive way and at a pace that you feel comfortable with. I am very relaxed and work in an informal way.

At these times it can be helpful to give ourselves the gift of speaking to someone outside of our family or friendship group.
I approach all clients in a warm, compassionate and non-judgemental way and have additionally been a holistic practitioner and tutor for over 30 years. I have a special interest in adoptees and the issues adoption can bring. I work with all individuals, regardless of what they are perhaps struggling to deal with.

Family Therapy Counsellors

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
