I work with both children and adults and have a keen interest in working with those who have experienced complex / relational trauma with or without self harming/
suicidal
behaviour. I also work with couples experiencing difficulties in their relationship and work towards understanding the emotional conflicts, that result in the relationship being strained or likely to end without support. There is no one size fits all therapeutic approach and so I place importance on developing a shared understanding of what the core issues are that impact you.

Hi, my name is Claire and I am a child and adult psychotherapist. Often people don't fully understand why they feel bad and this can lead to confusion and feeling ashamed. The feelings are experienced throughout the whole body and can be so overwhelming that they can lead to panic, depression, anxiety and challenging or self-destructive behaviours. I help clients understand how things are for them right now, validate their challenges and help them see their unique strengths, all within the context of an accepting and compassionate relationship. Life is tough. Sometimes we get to a point where we feel stuck, unable to see a way through. There are infinite reasons what may bring you to therapy; relationship breakdown, bereavement, a sense of loss of control, addiction, bullying, redundancy, the list goes on. We cannot change the past. But we can heal from the pain, towards a life worth living of your choice. Therapy is a collaborative process. Everybody is an individual and I will work with you as the expert on your own life; offering support, challenge, empathy and compassion along with the space to explore your own experience, which is so rarely possible in our daily lives

Sometimes we reach a point in our life where feelings of anxiety or depression take over. Together we can explore what brought you to this point in a caring, non-judgmental and welcoming environment. We will look for any patterns or early decisions made in childhood and work towards making new ones that work better for you. I have found that the journey of psychotherapy is a challenging but very rewarding journey of self-exploration, self-awareness and self-acceptance.

As an integrative psychotherapist, I work from a humanistic approach, which means I view my clients holistically, considering their views, backgrounds and experiences. I believe that we all have an innate ability to develop ourselves and our potentials. Over our lifetimes, we all form ways of thinking and being to adjust to our environments. However sometimes these habits and beliefs are no longer useful and can become hurdles, preventing us from progressing. This is where contacting a psychotherapist can be your first step towards self-development.

Suicidal Ideation Counsellors
How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?
Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioural therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.
Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?
Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioural, dialectical behaviour, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioural and dialectical behaviour therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.
Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?
The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.
How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?
As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
