My friends would describe me as a warm, bubbly and compassionate person. I am someone who is always ready to give people time. I understand it can be nerve wrecking attending therapy and seeking help. Having grown up in a culture where mental health , was not discussed I am hoping to help change the stigmatism around mental health. Please be reassured that I am here to help with your struggle. My long term goal is to help people feel empowered in order for them to be the best version of themselves.  I would like people to talk about mental health as if it does not define them.

Hi, my name is Hope. I know, a pretty good name for a therapist! I am an Integrative Psychotherapist. My aim and approach in therapy is to help you find your own path to the life you wish to live. We are all uniquely different and have different reactions to life and life events. I can help you work through some things you might find difficult. From here can make decisions to do something different, to break the patterns that no longer serve us in our life.

I am an accredited member of BACP and UKCP with experience in the NHS, university, and voluntary sectors, and in private practice since 2002. Sharing what troubles you, in a professional setting, is a positive step towards creating a better life for your self. Perhaps you have become frustrated with bringing about change in your life or maybe life events are beginning/continuing to cause you difficulties. You may be aware of thoughts or feelings about these - or experience them physically in your body. You may also feel stuck in trying to bring about change on your own, or to be different from how you experience yourself right now.

How effective is treatment for insomnia?

The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.

Are there specific medications for sleep problems?

There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.

Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?

There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.

What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?

Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
