Stress, anxiety, depression is no longer such a taboo subject, yet we often tell ourselves, I can cope with this myself or maybe nobody will want to listen because nobody has time, or how about I’m too ashamed and I blame myself so I will cope with this by myself...... Well I am here to offer you the space to speak the unspoken and explore worrying thoughts together. The problem might be a recent incident that has left you feeling unsettled or a long standing concern deep rooted in unresolved trauma that has affected you e.g. sleepless nights, social anxiety, fear, relationship issue, performance at work, mood, self worth.

I am passionate about working with trauma, PTSD and with individuals affected by sexual abuse.
I am a counselling psychologist working in the NHS, a senior lecturer and EMDR Therapist with substantial experience working with individuals experiencing a range of psychological difficulties across several settings (e.g., private settings, third sector settings, primary and secondary mental health NHS settings and inpatient psychiatric hospitals). Currently, I am only offering EMDR to individuals (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing). During sessions, I tend to draw on other approaches to develop the therapeutic relationship and enrich your skills and ability to navigate distressing experiences and emotions.

The decision to begin counselling and psychotherapy can be fuelled by many questions, such as: What can I do and change to feel better? Who am I? How did I become this person? Who do I really want to be, deep down? As a practicing integrative counsellor and psychotherapist in Birmingham City Centre, I support individuals in exploring and forming meaning to their distress. I work on establishing a trusting therapeutic relationship in a safe and non-judgemental environment, enabling us to explore the concerns you may bring, your feelings and thoughts.

I can support by offering therapy that is highly specialised on domestic and sexual abuse and coercive control.
I predominantly work with clients who have experienced domestic, sexual and narcissistic abuse, including in childhood. Experiencing abuse by someone who is supposed to love us can be incredibly hard to navigate emotionally and I work by supporting clients to recognise and heal from their experiences. Clients also tell me about the impact of abuse including anxiety, depression, symptoms of PTSD such as nightmares or flashbacks or struggles with new romantic relationships. I am particularly experienced in working with eating disorders, working with clients to manage symptoms, empowering them to go on and live enriching lives.

I work with a wide range of issues, including sexual abuse and childhood trauma.
Hi, I’m Nicki. I’m an integrative psychotherapist and a registered member of the BACP. I work with a range of approaches to suit your needs and preferences. Life can feel overwhelming at times—stress, trauma, or unresolved feelings can show up as anxiety, low mood, overthinking, issues seeming bigger than they are, sleep problems, or relationship challenges. You might feel anger, a sense of unfairness, struggle with past experiences that are still affecting you. In therapy, we can explore these experiences together. I’ll help you understand yourself and patterns, manage emotional overwhelm, and find more balance and calm.

Do you want to understand why you always act the way you do? Does it seem to you that your behavior follows repetitive patterns and you'd like to be able to change it, but you tend to always fall back into the same ruts? How about starting from the beginning and trying to understand what's going on?

You’ve tried to push through. You’ve read the books, listened to podcasts, maybe even told yourself it’s “not that bad.” But deep down, you know something isn’t shifting. The anxiety lingers, your confidence takes a hit, and the same patterns keep showing up in your relationships. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, or stuck in survival mode, you don’t have to navigate it alone.

I have supported individuals in managing their relationships with alcohol and substance use, and I have also worked with survivors of sexual abuse.
I focus on the connection between the body and emotions. In my practice, I can offer auricular acupuncture to support overall well-being. My approach is person-centred, integrative. I understand that various approaches can be confusing, but I have provided a brief statement below on how I work. My approach holds the belief that each individual knows themselves best and has the potential for personal growth. This growth is supported by our relationship and the environment we create together, where we begin to explore and challenge beliefs, attitudes and behaviours towards self and your relationships with others and the world.

Sexual Abuse Counsellors
How do therapists treat sexual abuse?
A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?
Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?
Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?
As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
