Self Esteem Counselling in Birmingham
Hi, my name is Vicky, and as a counsellor and someone who has accessed counselling to support myself in the past, I understand how challenging it can be. It is important to feel comfortable and, most of all, not judged. I see my role as a counsellor as helping you work through what it is that brought you to therapy and to help you understand the reasons for your thoughts and feelings.

Are you fed up with battling anxiety, does it sometimes feel like you’ve tried just about everything to sort it out but still it rises up almost out of nowhere? I can help you understand why you’re feeling anxious and learn how to manage your anxiety so that you can go on to live a life with more contentment. The relationships and experiences that we have, shape the way that we understand the world around. These can make us feel uneasy, and we need to think out aloud. Having an objective ear can help to better understand ourselves. This can be related to personal relationships, our working life, family challenges, life events and many aspects of the world around us. I offer a space that works ethically, and within the boundaries of confidentiality and safeguarding. I aim to support exploration of how challenges and concerns can be overcome in a collaborative way and at your pace. I offer individual counselling.

Therapy is a safe space to explore some of the confusing or difficult thoughts and feelings that arise throughout life's challenging phases. Major life transitions, relationship issues, bereavements, self-esteem, low mood or anxiety - these are all themes that are worthwhile addressing in therapy. Additionally therapy can be an investment into understanding yourself further; what causes you to think and act in certain ways as this is the gateway to facilitating meaningful and long-lasting change.

Being human is hard, but you don't have to go it alone. I can help you gain clarity about your needs and values. To slow down and pay more attention to your thoughts and emotional or behavioural patterns, which may be happening automatically or out of habit. To understand what their intentions are or what they’re trying to tell you about your life. To understand how you relate and talk to yourself, and to develop a more compassionate voice towards your self. This understanding will then be our guide for helping you to set goals and priorities for your therapy or your life, and for supporting you to work towards them.

Self Esteem Counsellors
When should a person seek therapy for low self-esteem?
When self-esteem problems begin to disrupt the healthy daily functioning of an individual, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not engaging with friends for fear of being judged, not completing work assignments because they don’t think they’re capable, or not finding romantic love because they don’t feel they’re worthy of it, a therapist may be able to help.
What are the signs of low self-esteem?
Low self-esteem is a common issue that can affect a person's mental and emotional well-being. Some common signs of low self-esteem include negative self-talk, perfectionism, social anxiety, difficulty making decisions, an inability to set boundaries, people-pleasing, and others. A lack of belief in oneself or one’s abilities and a feeling of not being worthy or deserving underlie most of these characteristics.
What causes low self-esteem?
Feelings of low self-worth can begin in childhood or adulthood. Being raised by a highly critical parent or growing up feeling constant disapproval can stay with a person well into adulthood. Specific issues in adulthood may also be a cause of low self-esteem. An unhappy relationship, a dysfunctional work or school experience can impact a person’s feelings of self-worth.
How can therapy improve self-esteem?
Therapists can help identify negative thought patterns that keep the client stuck in a loop of destructive self-talk and develop coping skills to change the voice in their head. A therapist can help with goal-setting, so that clients are better able to stay on task and build confidence from successfully completing work they’re proud of. Coaching a client on how to better communicate can improve relationships. These skills can result in someone with low self-esteem feeling empowered and living with less fear.
