Domestic abuse
is a complex, relational interaction that requires a relational approach to resolve.
Domestic abuse
can have a significant affect on mental health. Whether the
abuse
happened as a child or as an adult, abusive experiences can lead to low mood, high anxiety, flashbacks to incidents, difficulty trusting others as well as low self-confidence and self-esteem, even when the
abuse
is historic. These are all normal reactions to difficult and painful experiences. Specialist counsellors who understand what can happen and its impact on you helps recovery from those experiences. However, not everywhere in the UK offers specialist counselling: Dactari's online counselling service allows access to such specialism across the UK.

My main work consists of Couples counselling as well as trauma focused work, which includes childhood trauma. The work involves psycho education around brain fragments, where clients work to assess when they are operating from the frontal lobe and when they switch to the limbic system where they are reliving old trauma memories. Since Covid there has been an increased demand for couples work. A lot of work is around working with couples in troubled relationships. I work with children and young people who have experienced trauma and sexual
abuse
as well as bereavement support work.

As an integrative psychotherapist, I work from a humanistic approach, which means I view my clients holistically, considering their views, backgrounds and experiences. I believe that we all have an innate ability to develop ourselves and our potentials. Over our lifetimes, we all form ways of thinking and being to adjust to our environments. However sometimes these habits and beliefs are no longer useful and can become hurdles, preventing us from progressing. This is where contacting a psychotherapist can be your first step towards self-development.

I specialise in helping people to deal with traumatic experiences such as childhood trauma (emotional neglect or one of the many forms of
abuse
), or traumatic experiences you have been through in adulthood.
Do you feel stuck, lost and alone in life? Do you feel overwhelmed by your problems and struggle to understand why you feel so unhappy and unfulfilled? Do you worry about letting people get emotionally close to you and so tend to distance yourself from others? Yet then feel isolated and deeply unhappy? Have you always felt different or as though there was something wrong with you? Do you have a longing to understand yourself and feel an emotional connection with people in your life? I have worked with many people with these kinds of problems. It is likely that you experienced emotional neglect or trauma as a child.

Domestic Abuse Counsellors
What are the most effective ways to recover from domestic abuse?
Leaving an abusive relationship requires tremendous courage, so survivors in treatment should recognise that they have already completed the most important step. Still, the trauma of physical or emotional abuse can be difficult to process and overcome. Therapy can help survivors process trauma, grief, and difficult emotions, treat relevant mental health symptoms, and create a new framework for boundaries and relationships in the future. For some, support groups can also be an invaluable outlet for healing.
When should an individual seek help for domestic abuse?
Victims of intimate partner violence should seek help immediately. It can take substantial time, planning, energy, and courage to leave an abusive relationship, but starting the process—by seeking therapy, calling the domestic violence hotline, or simply confiding in a loved one—will help them get there. Those who have left abusive relationships but haven’t sought treatment can also greatly benefit from therapy to process and heal from the experience.
What are the consequences of staying in an abusive relationship?
Remaining in an abusive relationship has serious repercussions. In addition to the ongoing threat of physical danger and emotional abuse, research shows that intimate partner violence is associated with a range of mental health disorders including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and substance abuse. Therefore it’s important for individuals in an abusive relationship to seek help as soon as possible.
How can you get domestic abuse treatment for someone else?
It can be very complicated to identify and leave an abusive relationship; barriers include the threat of violence, financial instability, and family pressures. Those concerned about a loved one in an abusive relationship should talk to them about the situation, provide them with resources such as the domestic violence hotline, and introduce the idea of seeing a therapist due to their concern for the person’s safety and well-being.
