There is a quote by a lady called Anaïs Nin – “And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom" – a quote in which I firmly believe and embodies how vulnerable people feel when considering contacting a Counsellor for the first time. It is always helpful to talk to someone, especially when that someone is trained to listen and help in a specialised and interactive way. A counsellor is not there to judge you, nor are they there to tell you what to do. Instead counselling provides a safe and respectful environment to express and explore your feelings and troubles.

You may be feeling caught between who you are and who others expect you to be. Perhaps you're struggling in your relationships, carrying experiences from the past, or finding anxiety, low mood or difficult emotions harder to manage. You may find yourself overthinking, struggling to set boundaries, putting others' needs before your own, or feeling stuck and unsure of how to move forward. Whatever brings you to therapy, you don't need to have all the answers. Together, we can gently explore what's happening for you, understand your experiences and patterns more deeply, and explore what you might need for things to feel different.

Most people I work with don't come to therapy because they're broken. They come because they're tired. Tired of overthinking, questioning themselves, carrying everyone else, or feeling like they've lost who they are. My clients often struggle with anxiety, self-esteem, grief, identity, relationships or life transitions. Many have spent years coping alone and want a space where they no longer have to perform, have all the answers or pretend they're okay.

I currently offer online audio/video, or face to face sessions in my home, or yours, pending travel time.
Hi, my name is Karen. I gained my qualification in counselling and psychotherapy many years ago in 1997. I was privileged to attend an accredited course at Salford college. I also acquired certificates in sociology, psychology, child psychology, criminology, and hypnotherapy. Alongside the hypnotherapy certificate, I completed workshops in dream therapy, sex therapy, and inner child work. Over the years I have specialised in inner child work, and have witnessed many positive outcomes from using this technique. Since qualifying, I have worked with a diverse range of issues, of which no problem is too big or too small.

I provide a safe, supported space for clients to talk through whatever it is that has given rise to the thought: 'I could do with someone to help me out here'. Every person is unique, every individual brings their own story but the feeling that the problem is just too big to make any sense of is not so unusual. Often a client comes expressing feelings of aloneness and confusion as they try to find some order. It is not unusual for a client's first words to be: 'I don't know where to start'. Building trust in the therapy relationship is essential from the start and acceptance of the whole person is at the heart.

Escape the diet trap and find lasting weight loss with me. You may have tried many different diets, but can never do them for long, or regain the weight you have lost. You are not on your own; diets do not work in the long term. In fact, going on a strict 'diet' can lead to yo-yo dieting and weight gain. Whether you've been trapped in the diet cycle, or are considering, or already using, weight loss injections and want the psychological support that research shows makes them more effective, I can help you find what works for you, and a way of sticking at it. You deserve to stop fighting your body and finally feel at peace with food.

If this is you therapy can help provide a space for empathy, and understanding while helping you to move in a better direction. FAQ - About In Person Therapy
What are the benefits of in-person therapy?
In-person therapy offers several benefits that some people find highly valuable for their mental health treatment. Being present in the same room as your therapist can create a stronger sense of connection and allow for more nuanced communication through body language. Some people may also find it easier to focus in therapy when they are in a dedicated space and away from potential distractions related to home or work; attending an in-person session provides a clear boundary between therapy time and the rest of your life. For certain therapeutic approaches, such as Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), exposure therapy, or somatic therapy, being in person may be particularly important, as these therapies benefit from the therapist being able to observe and respond to a client’s physical cues effectively. Additionally, some individuals simply feel more comfortable discussing sensitive or painful topics when they are face-to-face with their therapist rather than on a screen.

When should I choose in-person therapy over online therapy?
In-person therapy may be a better choice when you need a structured therapeutic environment separate from your daily life, when you find it difficult to focus or feel comfortable in an online setting, or when privacy at home is a concern. It may also be more appropriate if you are dealing with severe mental health symptoms that require close monitoring or if your therapy involves approaches that rely heavily on observing physical cues. On the other hand, if convenience, scheduling flexibility, or access to specialists outside your immediate area are priorities, online therapy may be a better fit. Many therapists offer both options, so you can also discuss with a provider which format might work best for your specific situation.

How do I find an in-person therapist?
You can use Psychology Today's therapist directory to find an in-person therapist in your area. You can search by location, insurance accepted, specialty areas, therapeutic approaches, and other criteria to narrow down providers who meet your needs. Each therapist profile includes information about their credentials, areas of expertise, and whether they offer in-person sessions. Once you have identified potential therapists, you can contact them directly through the directory to schedule an initial consultation and determine whether they are a good fit before committing to ongoing treatment. When reaching out, it can be helpful to confirm their availability for in-person appointments, their office location, and whether they accept your insurance.
