I’m Kerry Batten, a registered BACP therapist with a psychodynamic approach. I work with individuals, couples, and those in other relationships, supporting a deeper understanding of how past experiences can influence present emotions, behaviours, and relationships. I offer a safe, reflective space to explore difficulties such as anxiety, depression, trauma (including sexual trauma) and grief. In our work together we may begin to notice unconscious patterns of feeling, thinking and relating, and how these show themselves both within yourself and in your relationships with others.

I have trained in Psychodynamic Counselling, Psychotherapeutic Counselling and Somatic Skills for Trauma. Through understanding how past events colour our view of the world and ourselves we can understand how to make progress towards a different outcome. If you feel stuck and are looking for more autonomy and agency, I can help. I have experience of working with some common mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, and also some personality disorders, neurodiversity, and the anxieties and challenges that can come alongside this. I am also qualified to supervise my peers in line with their professional registration.

Thinking about counselling can feel like a big step. You might be used to coping on your own or putting other people first, so having a space that’s just for you can feel unfamiliar at first. I offer a warm, relaxed, and non-judgmental space where you can talk things through at your own pace. I have experience in working with people who are going through changes in life - whether that’s shifts in relationships, loss, retirement, or simply a feeling that something isn’t quite right anymore. It could be a time of reflection or wondering “what now?” - and counselling can help you explore that.

You may be feeling overwhelmed, anxious, stuck, or carrying emotions that are hard to name. Perhaps you’re navigating identity, relationship tensions, cultural expectations, or long‑standing patterns that leave you unsure of yourself. Many people seek therapy because they want clarity, steadiness, and a space where they don’t have to explain their background or justify their feelings. You may be longing to feel understood, supported, and more grounded as you make sense of your inner world and move toward a more confident, connected way of being, with room to breathe and grow as you explore who you are becoming.

Do you struggle with focus, procrastination, or emotional overwhelm? I support people whose minds are often in hyperdrive, especially those with ADHD and/or anxiety. Over time, living this way can put strain on your relationships, wear down your self-esteem, and drain the joy from life. I offer a space where you don't have to mask and where you'll be supported by someone who has been there personally, and who brings a strong grounding in the research on both ADHD and anxiety. Together we'll work towards more ease and clarity, and a steadier trust in yourself.

I work psychoanalytically which involves paying particular attention to the words spoken and can reveal the unconscious processes that drive us. Each individual has their own unique response to their own upbringing and life’s circumstances. Life may seem overwhelming and out of control following a recent event or trauma. Talking to someone and being fully listened to, without being judged, can be the start of a process of coming to terms with difficult and traumatic experiences.

I offer a calm, supportive environment where you can be yourself, even if you’re unsure how you feel or where to begin. My work is person-centred, grounded in the belief that you are the expert in your own life and that, given the right conditions, growth and change can unfold naturally. Many people I work with describe feeling persistently low, anxious, or emotionally disconnected. You may find it hard to trust your feelings, downplay your needs, or feel uncertain about your sense of self or direction. Perhaps you’ve become used to coping quietly or managing things alone, but this way of being is starting to feel unsustainable.

You might feel stuck despite doing everything “right”. You may struggle with trauma, eating difficulties, intrusive thoughts, or a harsh inner critic that’s hard to switch off. Many of my clients are deep thinkers who feel responsible for everything and exhausted by it. You might look like you’re coping on the outside, while internally feeling overwhelmed or disconnected. I offer structured therapy and EMDR intensives to help you understand what’s keeping you stuck

FAQ - Therapist Gender
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or because they feel more comfortable with a therapist of their own gender due to shared life experiences or perspectives. Considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender may matter or improve their therapeutic experience. The most important consideration is that a client is able to build a trusting relationship with their therapist.

Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist. For women, this could be because they believe that they will be able to better connect with a woman, and that a female therapist will be able to relate to their specific challenges and personal issues. It may be particularly beneficial for women to see a female therapist, for example, for gender-specific issues, such as sexism in the workplace, relationship issues, and gender roles. The most important factor in therapy is the client-therapist connection, and a therapist's gender as well as many other factors may play an important role in this.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
