Past traumas haunts us, while the unpredictable future worries us - living in the present becomes increasingly more difficult. The constant that we can rely on is change. My aim is to help you take control of the change that you want to make, to claim the life you want for yourself, to find your meaning in your life, and live it as fully as possible.
Many of the people I work with have spent years trying to understand why they continue to feel unsafe, fragmented, disconnected or stuck despite previous work and interventions. I aim to meet you exactly where you are at and together we can take the steps towards your goals and needs.

How would you feel if I told you that you can stop feeling scared, unsafe and overwhelmed ? That you could connect with those around you in an authentic and meaningful way, rather than masking yourself because you fear losing them ? I can tell you this as I have supported many people like yourself, living with complex trauma to let go of the patterns that are keeping them low, anxious, dissociated, paranoid and lonely. I work with people just like you to firstly understand what has happened to them and how the strategies they are currently using have come to be. I then work to introduce new ways of being in the world.

If you are feeling anxious, depressed or confused about your current situation, we will work collaboratively to gain further insight on how you are affected by this. In time you will have a better understanding of how to manage these concerns and arrive at a satisfactory resolution. Having worked in mental health for 23 years, I have gained specialist knowledge and experience of working with an extensive range of presenting issues. I trained as a humanistic/person-centred counsellor, then went on to train as a psychodynamic psychotherapist, added to that I work interculturally, providing a safe non-judgmental therapeutic space.

Life today seems to be overloaded by a variety of stress in many spheres of existence. What should be enjoyable and fulfilling sometimes turns out to be the very cause of suffering. In the midst of the busy-ness of life, we do not take the time to address this suffering and instead criticise and blame ourselves or others. This could potentially leave us feeling confused and ashamed. Shame does not heal the pain of suffering. Every human being has a need to be understood, accepted and validated because the human brain is wired to love and be loved.

Perhaps you understand why you struggle, but something still doesn't change. You may be anxious, stuck, people-pleasing, repeating painful relationship patterns, or simply feel you've somehow lost yourself. We are not psychologically mono: under trauma, loss or prolonged stress, parts of us can become hidden or exiled while others take over the job of coping. My work asks a different question: who is missing? Together we investigate what happened, what you feel in the body, and what part of you may need to be retrieved. Sometimes the part we find isn't the wounded one. It's your confidence, creativity, voice or power.

Perhaps you have become used to coping, holding things together or hiding how difficult things feel. Inside, you may feel overwhelmed, disconnected from yourself, troubled by the past, or confused by thoughts, feelings and responses that can be difficult to explain. You don’t need to arrive with a clear story or the “right” words. I work with adults experiencing trauma, dissociation, anxiety and emotional distress, including experiences that may not have felt fully understood before.

I have a particular interest in working with people who find themselves navigating different worlds, identities, and expectations.
This may include people who have migrated, children, grandchildren of immigrants, LGBTQIA + clients who may have grown up balancing values of one culture at home and another outside it.
I am less interested in helping people fit into a predetermined idea of how life should be lived, and more in helping them discover a way of living, loving, and relating that feels meaningful, authentic, and sustainable for them.

Dissociative Disorders (DID) Counsellors
How does therapy for dissociative disorders work?
Dissociation may be triggered by stress or other upsetting circumstances, and therapy can address the traumatic events at the core of an individual’s dissociation. Understanding why a person may dissociate can help the therapist and the individual come up with alternative methods of coping. A person with a dissociative disorder may get stuck on negative thinking, for example, and treatment like Cognitive behavioural therapy is a gold standard for breaking such thinking. And dialectical behaviour therapy, for example, can help a person manage their anguish through better emotion regulation.
Which therapies are best for dissociative disorders?
Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioural, dialectical behaviour, psychodynamic, schema therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioural and dialectical behaviour therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful memories and past traumas. These therapies work to integrate an individual's different identities into one person.
Are there specific medications for dissociation?
There are no specific medications prescribed for dissociative disorders. However, psychosis, depression, anxiety, and/or panic often co-occur in dissociative disorders. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for any accompanying symptom which may include antipsychotics, antidepressants, or anti-anxiety drugs.
How often and how long are therapy sessions?
Like any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. There are still other patients, especially those who have co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, who may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months.
