Whether you are looking for support through challenging times or trying to make sense of your life, talking to a professional counsellor can be really valuable when things feel overwhelming and uncertain, we all need help at times. Feelings we can’t manage or make sense of can impact on our whole sense of well-being and prevent us from living our lives fully. Counselling can help manage current situations and look at new ways of coping. It can also give us insight, understanding and perspective on past experiences.

My name is Sauda (she/her) and I specialise in supporting young people (13+) and adults who are going through or have been through difficult experiences. Having gone through several traumatic experiences myself, I can understand how hard it can be to make sense of life again. You may feel sad, scared, angry or perhaps it’s hard to feel anything at all, leaving you not knowing who you are anymore. I believe that I can help you work through many of the difficult experiences you have been through, and help you to find your way back to you - to find joy and meaning in life again.

Therapy is your space to think about you, your experiences, your feelings, your life. When things are feeling difficult, you may not know the reason why. Taking time to talk to someone not involved in your life can be helpful.

Warmth, empathy, non-judgemental acceptance, scientific rigour and humour are at the heart of my approach to therapy. I follow core CBT traditions which put the client and therapist on an equal footing in a collaborative partnership, with the client as the authoritative expert in themselves. I aim to debunk and demystify, strip out jargon, and explain transparently how I work. CBT aims to give clients a therapeutic fishing rod, not just a fish, so that clients are helped to become CBT experts, their own therapists for the future. Therapy can be challenging, but more often it should be healing, uplifting, enriching and fun.

Talking to someone about things that are making you feel uncomfortable, anxious, or perhaps overwhelmed can help. Sometimes, just saying out loud how you feel can start a process that leads to change and new choices in your life. Thinking, with a counsellor, about the experiences that are making you feel this way can give you the support, the space and insight to find a way through what’s troubling you. I have experience supporting adults who are struggling with aspects of their life such as anxiety, depression, grief, identity, sexuality and self-esteem and I offer a warm and professional place where we can work together.

Life can be difficult and that can stir all sort of feelings in us. I look to work alongside clients to explore and reflect on their experiences and relationships in the hope of seeing new possibilities that are often hidden from view. I work with people from all walks of life and backgrounds, who come to therapy for all sorts of reasons. It is about providing you with the space and voice to explore and find your answers, rather than telling you what to do.

Something feels harder than it should and you might not even have the words for it yet. Maybe you're overwhelmed, anxious, or carrying grief you can't quite name. Perhaps becoming a parent has brought unexpected emotions to the surface. Or you're in the middle of a life transition that's left you feeling lost. I offer warm, relational psychotherapy tailored entirely to you, a space to slow down, make sense of what's happening and feel less alone with it.

I work using a combination of Humanistic and Cognitive Behavioural (CBT) approaches. I believe that this offers you the best of both worlds. You may feel your life has lost meaning and this can lead to depression, stress or anxiety. This can sometimes be due to unhelpful or negative thinking (cognitive) patterns and together we can work on these. Talking to a professional counsellor can help you process those feelings and move towards a more contented life. I will not judge you and I will always work at your pace. I offer a careful balance of support and gentle challenge.

If you’re investigating psychotherapists right now, it’s likely something in your life isn’t working. It may be that you’re struggling with feelings of depression, anxiety or low self-esteem. Perhaps you’re having difficulties in your relationships, or your work is not fulfilling you. You might be carrying painful memories from the past that you’re unable to let go of and these experiences are now preventing you from leading the life you wish for yourself. Perhaps your coping mechanisms are not working or have become destructive, or maybe you feel there is something more to life, but you don't know what that something is.

Thank you for looking at my profile. My name is Paul, I work with a person centred approach. This means that you lead the session. This does not mean that I sit there in silence and occasionally nod…. The relationship between a counsellor and a client is everything. My aim would be to work with you to achieve your goal, this could be reducing levels of anxiety, coming to terms with a loss, being able to repair a relationship, addressing an addiction issue etc

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are members of the main professional associations, mainly the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). Most Psychologists in the directory are accredited members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and/or are registered in the Health and Care Professions Council (HPCP).

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement for psychotherapists and counsellors in the UK, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and experience that enable them to do so in the UK. Psychologists have earned a degree in psychology and many are members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and have completed a postgraduate qualification in a specialism. Counsellors and Psychotherapists are not required to have a psychology degree, but to belong to a professional organisation such as the BACP or UKCP, they are required to have completed a training course as well as clinical and supervision hours.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the UK could be between £30 - £60 when seeing a counsellor and £60 - £150 and up when seeing a clinical psychologist. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. The NHS Talking therapies programme offers free of charge counselling for common mental health problems like anxiety and depression. The service is available to anyone registered with a GP, though you do not necessarily need to be referred by your GP and can refer yourself directly to a Talking therapies service. The service will provide different solutions, including group and individual therapy, for a limited number of sessions which are generally up to six.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Therapists who are part of a professional organisation such as the BACP, the UKCP, or BPS are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there has been participation in a criminal act or act of terror, or if there is potential or known harm to the client or others, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
