Sometimes we need to talk. Or unload. Or work out what needs to change. Sometimes we need to do this with someone who's NOT family or a friend or colleague - someone who can listen deeply and confidentially, with fresh ears - with no bias or judgement. Someone who's steady, accepting and unshockable. What does counselling with me look like? Well, there's no one-size-fits-all. I will tailor it to your needs, session by session. You may have clear objectives, or none at all. It's all ok. We can work it out. I'll certainly want to get to know YOU as a human being, not just the 'issue' you're bringing.

No matter our background, we are affected by hardship or adversity at one time or another. Sometimes, we feel overwhelmed and defeated, at a loss as to what to do next. We may suffer depression, be flooded with anxiety or find ourselves endlessly arguing with those closest to us. My counselling and psychotherapy practice encourages cultivating inner attitudes of self-compassion, self-empathy, and unconditional acceptance. These interventions help people form a healthy, genuine self-image and heal emotional wounds which hold them back from relational and personal joy.

Hi! I’m Emma and I’m a person-centred therapist. I have found my niche is working with trauma and relationships, often working with individuals who are neurodiverse and LGBTQIA+ due to my own ADHD diagnosis and non-binary identity. However, I have experience working with a wide range of clients and topics. I offer support for whatever is on your mind.
You are not a problem to be fixed, my job as your therapist is to provide the right conditions to allow you to explore whatever you want to bring to therapy to support your growth. This isn't a therapeutic approach wherein I will set a treatment plan or tell you what to do.

Are you struggling with feeling anxious, low or depressed, uncertain or disconnected? All around us people are feeling anxious, overwhelmed and uncertain about how they are supposed to manage their relationships, careers and their lives. You are not alone. Talking about it can really help but perhaps the people you usually talk to are struggling with their own problems or don’t know how to help. I’ve spent 27 years as a therapist listening and helping people find more peace, clarity and joy in life.

Don’t feel like yourself at the moment? Feeling lost or hopeless? Maybe you’ve been existing in survival mode for so long you don’t really know who you are anymore. Need help working out how to get back to feeling yourself again?
Sometimes therapy can look at the surface level problems, the anxiety, overthinking, sadness or fears. But miss the root of the problem because they're not working with all of you. I’ve found if you work with the whole person instead of one part, there is more chance of creating meaningful change that lasts long after the therapy ends.

We all want to be the best versions of ourselves but sometimes we need support to get through difficult life experiences. Such times can take us away from living the way we truly want to live. In individual sessions, we can share a calm and confidential space where exploring challenges can lead to a deeper understanding of ourselves and our relationships. Together, we can find ways to make the changes that will impact life going forward. With couples, we will help to shift from unhelpful patterns of poor communication and entrenched behaviours, to create emotional safety and move towards mutual trust & understanding.

Transgender Counsellors
As a gender-diverse individual, why might I want to see a therapist who is also gender diverse?
A trans or gender-diverse client may want to see a therapist who is also trans or gender diverse because the client may feel safer sharing their experiences and more confident that the therapist will understand, validate, and support them. But trans or gender-diverse clients can also benefit from therapy with cisgender therapists; this is a personal decision based on the connection between the client and the therapist, and if that connection is strong, therapy will be successful.
What if I cannot find a therapist who shares my gender identity?
Therapy can still be effective if a therapist does not share a client’s gender identity; a large body of research indicates that the most important factor in successful therapy is the therapeutic alliance. A therapist can also be interviewed for sensitivity and competence on gender identity and expression to ensure they possess appropriate knowledge and skills. Many therapists have excellent training and extensive experience working with gender-diverse clients, and that expertise can be invaluable despite a therapist not sharing the same firsthand experiences.
How can I recognise a good therapist for working with gender-diverse clients?
An experienced therapist should be able to help clients explore their gender identity and expression, alleviate discomfort related to their gender identity, treat mental health challenges and trauma, address existing relationships and communication with family members and loved ones, and determine the next steps pertaining to nonmedical or medical gender-affirming interventions. To recognise a good therapist, clients can ask about these topics and explore their comfort and connection with the clinician.
How might I inquire about a therapist’s experience working with transgender clients?
Clients should feel comfortable asking therapists directly about their experience working with transgender or gender-diverse clientele. For example, clients may ask about the therapist’s training and education with regard to gender identity, how many trans clients they’ve worked with in the past, and what sorts of matters were discussed. You may wish to inquire how a therapist specifically supports the needs of transgender clients or clients questioning their gender identity. A good clinician who is nonetheless not the right fit for you is often happy to make referrals to others based on the concerns you articulate in a preliminary conversation.
