I am a psychotherapist. The key to my work with clients is the belief that through a psychotherapeutic relationship we can gain insights into our patterns of behaviour. By working relationally we can also explore the possibility for change and begin to think of alternative positions that can lead toward a more compassionate and fulfilled version of ourselves. Currently in full training as a psychoanalytic psychotherapist at The Site for Contemporary Psychoanalysis. UKCP Member.

Hello, thank you for stopping by my page! Many of us often face difficult times or may not feel supported by the people or systems around us. You may be struggling with issues such as anxiety, depression, loss, bereavement, relationship issues, self-harm, trauma, or abuse. Therapy is an opportunity to focus on immediate/past issues, whilst also strengthening your own identity and self-worth. I aim to offer a safe, non-judgmental, confidential, therapeutic space and encourage people of different ethnicities and socioeconomic backgrounds to enquire.

Hi, I’m Alanna. Starting therapy can be daunting and that's completely understandable. It takes a lot of courage to be vulnerable, however in doing so you are already taking steps towards making changes inside you, that will begin to change things around you too. My approach is to help you unpack what is going on for you at present, how this has developed over time and any recurring patterns that may be keeping you stuck. I am never thinking "what is wrong with you?" but rather what strategies had to be adopted in response to life's circumstances. I provide a warm, non-judgemental space for you to truly feel heard and understood.

It can be difficult to talk about what is worrying you, and you might not even be able to explain all of your feelings. I provide a safe, confidential, non-judgemental and empathetic space for you to explore thoughts, feelings and emotions that make you unique. I believe that you will have your own solutions, so I do not offer advice but will work with you for you to gain an insight into yourself, increasing self-awareness, developing greater inner strength and furthering personal growth and development. This, in turn, supports with anxiety, depression and other issues.

Self Esteem Counsellors
When should a person seek therapy for low self-esteem?
When self-esteem problems begin to disrupt the healthy daily functioning of an individual, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not engaging with friends for fear of being judged, not completing work assignments because they don’t think they’re capable, or not finding romantic love because they don’t feel they’re worthy of it, a therapist may be able to help.
What are the signs of low self-esteem?
Low self-esteem is a common issue that can affect a person's mental and emotional well-being. Some common signs of low self-esteem include negative self-talk, perfectionism, social anxiety, difficulty making decisions, an inability to set boundaries, people-pleasing, and others. A lack of belief in oneself or one’s abilities and a feeling of not being worthy or deserving underlie most of these characteristics.
What causes low self-esteem?
Feelings of low self-worth can begin in childhood or adulthood. Being raised by a highly critical parent or growing up feeling constant disapproval can stay with a person well into adulthood. Specific issues in adulthood may also be a cause of low self-esteem. An unhappy relationship, a dysfunctional work or school experience can impact a person’s feelings of self-worth.
How can therapy improve self-esteem?
Therapists can help identify negative thought patterns that keep the client stuck in a loop of destructive self-talk and develop coping skills to change the voice in their head. A therapist can help with goal-setting, so that clients are better able to stay on task and build confidence from successfully completing work they’re proud of. Coaching a client on how to better communicate can improve relationships. These skills can result in someone with low self-esteem feeling empowered and living with less fear.
