You may be considering psychotherapy for a specific concern, or 'symptom', that you would like to address (e.g. anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, etc.). Or you may have a specific question, or life transition, that needs attention. You may find you're repeating the same 'patterns' over and again. It may be that you have a general sense of uneasiness, meaninglessness, or a lack of playfulness in life. Or perhaps you want to get to know yourself more deeply and experience life more fully. Of course, you may also feel unsure about why exactly you'd like to talk to a psychotherapist, but still want to.

I am a counsellor, carer and single parent, and have worked in many industries including self-employment for over sixteen years - all done with ADHD not diagnosed until I was 50.
My name is Sally Spigner and I am a BACP registered counsellor working from a relaxed home office between Bromley and Grove Park. I am passionate about helping clients make changes in life, from teenagers with social anxiety, to executives suffering with burnout. If your life needs to change, and the change has to come now, come along and have a chat. Counselling can help when you have issues which you prefer not to talk about with family and friends, or indeed when they might be part of the problem. There is no need for you to face your problems alone.

Are you worried or overwhelmed? I support individuals living with and grappling with the uncertainties of cancer, and offer a space for you away from friends/family. Do you need somewhere to come and just be? I work with you as you are without shame and provide ongoing support when perhaps daily life is really hard. If you want to we can look together at any distressing emotions and make sense of where they might come from. Clients usually find that making the decision to come to counselling gives hope, a sense of connection and feelings of being understood.

I also work with individuals facing life crises - those pivotal moments when circumstances shift unexpectedly through job loss, relationship changes, or other significant transitions. It can be difficult to talk about what is worrying you, and you might not even be able to explain all of your feelings. I provide a safe, confidential, non-judgemental and empathetic space for you to explore thoughts, feelings and emotions that make you unique. I believe that you will have your own solutions, so I do not offer advice but will work with you for you to gain an insight into yourself, increasing self-awareness, developing greater inner strength and furthering personal growth and development. This, in turn, supports with anxiety, depression and other issues.

Welcome. Finding the right therapist can be a challenging process. It's essential to find someone who is the right fit. I offer a safe, non-judgmental, and confidential space where my role would be to help you explore your abilities and strengths, enabling you to navigate whatever issues you face, develop a deeper understanding of yourself and enhance your overall sense of wellbeing. I believe that there is no single approach that works for everyone, as each person’s circumstances are unique. By combining elements from different modalities, I am able to create a personalised approach that suits you.

When should I seek treatment for ADHD?
You should seek treatment for ADHD if you consistently have difficulty with attention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity that interferes with your daily life. Symptoms of ADHD include the inability to sustain attention during tasks, difficulty organizing tasks and activities, being easily distracted, frequent fidgeting or squirming, and talking or interrupting excessively. If these symptoms interfere with your career, academics, or relationships—for example, consistently failing to complete professional projects on time—you should seek an evaluation for ADHD.

How does treatment for ADHD work?
Effective treatment for ADHD often consists of medication, behavioural therapy, and lifestyle changes. Stimulant medications such as Adderall and Ritalin work by altering levels of neurotransmitters in the brain; higher levels of dopamine and norepinephrine are known to improve attention and focus. Therapy works by helping people with ADHD understand the condition, discuss their areas of difficulty, and develop behavioral strategies to manage their symptoms. In some cases, modifying one’s diet and exercise can also help improve symptoms.

How long does treatment for ADHD take?
It’s tough to give an exact time frame because everyone varies. In terms of medications, stimulants begin to work very soon after you take them, generally within the hour. It may take time to identify the right medication and dosage, but the medication itself is fast-acting. In terms of therapy, it takes time to develop skills and put them into practice, but you will likely see improvements within a few weeks or months.
