Psychotherapy can help support you with a range of concerns. You could be feeling troubled by something in your life. You could be feeling low or anxious, perhaps from a bereavement, trauma or abuse. You may find it difficult to sustain healthy relationships. You may be experiencing chronic pain, an addiction to something that is doing you harm, or trying to come to terms with a frightening medical diagnosis. You may also hope to understand and love yourself and others better, to become more authentic, to understand the pain of being human, or to seek spiritual fulfilment.

Psychotherapy literally means to nurse the soul deriving its name from the ancient Greeks understanding of human nature and the psyche. Psychotherapy occurs when a therapist meets with a client in a private and confidential setting to explore any difficulties the client is having or the distress he or she may be experiencing, a general dissatisfaction with life where an explanation is not readily known, a loss of a sense of direction or purpose. It is a common misconception that only individuals who experience mental health problems require psychotherapy. In fact Psychotherapy is of great value to anyone.

I offer therapy sessions online, or by telephone, to clients across the UK and in person in Southport..
Hello! Maybe you're someone who’s used to supporting others in your professional life, your relationships, or your family, but rarely have space to think about your own needs. You might be feeling anxious, low in yourself, or quietly struggling with things that are hard to put into words. Anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, self-doubt, relationship difficulties, recovery and the impact of addiction are some of the things that we can explore together. Therapy can be a space where you don’t have to perform, please, or hold everything together. We can move at your pace, giving you room to be yourself without pressure or judgement.

I offer sessions online, or in person across Bootle, Litherland, Crosby and Waterloo.
Hi, I’m Tom. I’m a person-centred counsellor based in Liverpool. I’m deeply passionate about the transformative power of feeling truly listened to and supporting people to reach their potential. Are you stuck? Struggling with a loss, the end of a relationship or a difficult diagnosis? Maybe you’re not sure why you’re not feeling okay. Maybe you’ve been in a dark place for a while. Not knowing why you’re feeling how you are, or how to feel better, can be bewildering, frustrating, depressing and lonely. No matter what your circumstances are, or where you are on your journey, you don’t have to navigate it alone.

Support, warmth, understanding and acceptance, together with a professional service, this is what I base my counselling practice on. Life can sometimes feel overwhelming, frustrating, unfair...even cruel, throwing so many unexpected hurdles in our way. Struggling can be a lonely, isolating place and sometimes we need more than just talking with family or friends. I offer a calm, confidential, non-judgemental space to truly be heard and listened to in which you can explore your struggles or confusions and, hopefully, enable you to recover your own perspective and clarity surrounding whatever difficulties are impacting your life.

Life can feel too much when you are juggling lots of different roles and you may feel as if you are weighed down by everything that you are carrying. This might leave you feeling stressed, anxious or depressed. Putting the needs of others before yourself can be exhausting and a constant source of worry, negative thinking and conflicting emotions. Maybe you are finding it hard to gain a work life balance. Maybe this is causing relationship difficulties or affecting your ability to connect with others. Perhaps you keep telling yourself that you should be managing better but are finding it hard to cope and can't admit this to anyone.

FAQ - About In Person Therapy
What are the benefits of in-person therapy?
In-person therapy offers several benefits that some people find highly valuable for their mental health treatment. Being present in the same room as your therapist can create a stronger sense of connection and allow for more nuanced communication through body language. Some people may also find it easier to focus in therapy when they are in a dedicated space and away from potential distractions related to home or work; attending an in-person session provides a clear boundary between therapy time and the rest of your life. For certain therapeutic approaches, such as Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), exposure therapy, or somatic therapy, being in person may be particularly important, as these therapies benefit from the therapist being able to observe and respond to a client’s physical cues effectively. Additionally, some individuals simply feel more comfortable discussing sensitive or painful topics when they are face-to-face with their therapist rather than on a screen.

When should I choose in-person therapy over online therapy?
In-person therapy may be a better choice when you need a structured therapeutic environment separate from your daily life, when you find it difficult to focus or feel comfortable in an online setting, or when privacy at home is a concern. It may also be more appropriate if you are dealing with severe mental health symptoms that require close monitoring or if your therapy involves approaches that rely heavily on observing physical cues. On the other hand, if convenience, scheduling flexibility, or access to specialists outside your immediate area are priorities, online therapy may be a better fit. Many therapists offer both options, so you can also discuss with a provider which format might work best for your specific situation.

How do I find an in-person therapist?
You can use Psychology Today's therapist directory to find an in-person therapist in your area. You can search by location, insurance accepted, specialty areas, therapeutic approaches, and other criteria to narrow down providers who meet your needs. Each therapist profile includes information about their credentials, areas of expertise, and whether they offer in-person sessions. Once you have identified potential therapists, you can contact them directly through the directory to schedule an initial consultation and determine whether they are a good fit before committing to ongoing treatment. When reaching out, it can be helpful to confirm their availability for in-person appointments, their office location, and whether they accept your insurance.
