Psychodynamic Counselling in Batheaston
My work is guided by Humanistic principles, and I draw from psychodynamic and transpersonal approaches.
I provide a space to explore whatever struggles may have brought you here - it might be anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, relationship difficulties, or a general sense that you are not where you want to be in life. By exploring current or long-standing challenges, we can work together to better understand unhelpful patterns which might be keeping you stuck, and start to build a heathier relationship with yourself and others.
Previously I have worked at the BCPC Low-Cost Counselling Service, and I have experience working with adults with a broad range of issues.

If you're feeling anxious or overwhelmed, struggling with a difficult life event, your relationships or sense of self, I offer a warm and supportive space for you to better understand yourself. I often work with women who feel they've lost themselves beneath the roles they fulfil; are navigating motherhood, relationship changes, career changes or menopause; are emotionally exhausted; want to understand why they think, feel and respond the way they do; and are curious about how childhood relationships continue to shape their adult selves.

I often work with people struggling with low mood, anxiety, esteem issues, obsessive thoughts, relationship issues, problematic behaviours (such as problematic skin picking), traumatic experiences and unhelpful coping. You may feel overwhelmed or anxious, or find yourself stuck in patterns that are difficult to change. You might struggle with your relationship with your body and/or food, control, self-criticism, or feel disconnected from yourself or others. You may recognise past experiences continue to affect how you think, feel, or relate.
Therapy can be a space to talk things through at your own pace, work towards your goals, and no longer feel that you need to hold this on your own.

” I draw on Psychodynamic, Existential, Attachment, CBT, Gestalt, Humanistic, and somatic theories to explore your story, untangle old patterns, and support new, healthier ways of relating.
You don’t need to have it all worked out, or even know what’s going on. If life feels like it should be different but you’re not sure how, this is a great starting point.
You might feel alone carrying whatever it is - untangible, anxious, ashamed, or stuck in repeating patterns that leave you frustrated or disconnected. Some carry the impact of early life trauma or have learned to hide parts of themselves just to get by.
You might be questioning your identity, struggling with intimacy, feeling disconnected from your body, or wanting to explore your relationship style, including non-traditional setups.

Working from a psychodynamic perspective, I focus on trauma within families, childhood and relationships and explore attachment issues as a way to heal these disturbances.
Sometimes life can begin to feel challenging and painful, impacting your inner and outer world. This could be instigated by past traumas, current distressing circumstances or a long-standing mental health condition. Maybe you cannot identify what feels out of place but know that you would like support to explore these emotions and work towards a place of healing. The prospect of entering into therapy can feel like an overwhelming decision, especially in choosing what will best suit your needs. I believe the therapeutic relationship is of the utmost importance, enabling trust and respect, ultimately resulting in lasting change.

Perhaps you're feeling overwhelmed by anxiety, stuck in painful relationship patterns, or carrying the effects of trauma that still affect your day-to-day life. Therapy offers a space to understand what's happening, make sense of your experiences, and begin moving forward.

My approach brings together both humanistic and psychodynamic elements.
You might be here because life feels overwhelming, something doesn't feel right, or you've found yourself repeating the same patterns without knowing why. Perhaps you're feeling anxious, disconnected, stuck, or navigating loss, change, or relationship difficulties. Whatever brings you here, therapy offers a space to slow down, make sense of what's happening, and explore it together.
There is no right place to start. We begin with whatever feels most present - an emotion, a thought, something that happened in your week - and follow what unfolds from there. Wherever we begin, the work has a way of leading us towards what matters.

My training comprised Humanistic, Psychodynamic and CBT therapies.
In troubling times it can sometimes feel like you are alone & seeking help might feel really difficult. Just having a space to make sense of the thoughts that jumble around our heads is invaluable. Perhaps you need to understand yourself, your relationships or events from your past. Sometimes all we need is someone to just listen and hear our story. Counselling promotes insight, fosters self-awareness & creates a stronger, more resilient sense of self. This powerful combination can be the kick-start for the changes in your life you wish to make - sometimes even the smallest changes can make a huge difference in your well-being.

Psychodynamic Counsellors
Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?
Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.
How long does psychodynamic therapy last?
Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.
Does psychodynamic therapy work?
Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.
What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?
Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
