I am a generalist, but have a special interest in bereavement, depression and anxiety.
If you have got this far you probably have an inkling that to talk about what is troubling you might help. Why not give it a try? Perhaps you are wondering how it works. The short answer is we work together to make connections between your past experience and your present life. It is as we become more aware of these connections that change can flourish. Why not take a step of faith and see where "talking about it" gets you?

Everyone is as unique and as individual as the issues, needs and goals that they present with in therapy. My various client's presenting difficulties are often diverse, ranging from those with mild anxiety and low mood - perhaps needing some clarity or direction in life - or maybe just needing to talk things through; to those with heightened symptoms of trauma, depression , distress and generally finding life extremely difficult to manage. The spectrum of emotional wellbeing and mental health is as vast as the various triggers and reasons as to why people initially come to therapy. Coping alone can feel extremely overwhelming.

You are brave and have identified that you need some support at this very turbulent time. When a crisis hits, a future that was once clear can become confusing and scary. Life is now very complicated and can leave us with feelings of anxiety, stress and depression . These negative feelings can make life overwhelming. Sometimes it is helpful to talk to a person not directly involved in order to gain clarity and insight.

I previously worked for a mental health charity, supporting clients experiencing extreme stress, relationship challenges, anxiety or depression and those needing anger management.
My goal is to help you to manage the challenges that you face in life. Your issues may be around dealing with illness, loss and bereavement or extreme stress and anxiety - my specialist areas. I help you to become more confident, increasing your self esteem and self worth and finding ways to challenge your negative thinking. Counselling may not always change your circumstances, but I can help to cope with them better. My integrative approach means I use different styles depending on your needs. I offer a confidential, non-judgemental and safe space in which to explore your concerns. This can be short term or longer term work.

I have worked with drug and alcohol misuse for 3 years now, however , this encompasses many mental health conditions, domestic abuse, bullying, low self esteem, anxiety, depression , relationship issues, food issues and others.
Life is hard for many of us and having a safe space to talk and be listened to, without fear of judgement or others opinions being foisted on us, is paramount to our health and well-being. Talking therapies are more relevant today than ever, as many of us are isolated and struggle in our relationships and lives. All types of mental health issues can be helped with psychotherapy. Medication is not the answer for many of us, it doesn’t help us to understand and change our feelings and responses to others. Please call for a free initial telephone consultation

I am an experienced, professionally qualified and BACP registered Counsellor. I hope to be able to offer you a safe, confidential environment that can support you to explore areas within your life that are troubling you, thus promoting awareness and personal resilience. I understand that sometimes there is not always an answer to every problem and sometimes it is simply about taking the journey with another person that actually makes the difference. Counselling is not an easy option it takes courage and strength. It helps us think about things in a different light and from a different perspective.

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognise and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioural activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
