If you have been through trauma and are experiencing any of the symptoms such as panic attacks, destructive relationships, financial abuse, physical abuse, emotional abuse, parental alienation, sexual abuse or you had a dysfunctional childhood.
I am a caring and empathic person and I'd like you to know that you matter to me and it is an honour to be part of your journey. As I begin to know you a little more each session I will create a safe environment for you to talk freely and hold space for you, as you explore your life story. I understand it is a big step to have the courage to reach out to a therapist and consider working with me so let me introduce myself. I am an open, honest and experienced Person centred therapist and use an integrative approach as one size does not fit all, I work with the material the client is bringing in the here and now.

Sometimes we lose our way a little in life. Perhaps there are aspects in your life that are causing you anxiety, distress, or preventing you from moving forward? In a world full of uncertainty we can often feel overwhelmed, fearful and unsure where to move next. Redundancy, illness, relationship issues, depression and anxiety can often leave us feeling unsafe and lost, and sometimes we just need a helping hand in working through these emotions and patterns in order to start to make sense of the world and ourselves again.

Emma is a psychotherapist, counsellor, life coach, supervisor and trainer. Because of coronavirus I am changing how I work. I am seeing clients online rather than face to face. Obviously this is a hugely anxious time and people need emotional support more than ever. I am offering 50 minute sessions online as well as half hour sessions which will be lower cost because of the shorter duration. This is a difficult time and it’s important that we contain our anxiety so we can be loving neighbours, parents, partners and colleagues. Sessions will be aimed at resourcing you and finding ways to be more peaceful.

I am an experienced consultant clinical psychologist, working with adults with a whole range of mental health problems. I specialise in emotional instability and impulsive behaviours, such as self-harm, bullimia, misusing substances, as well as problems in relationships. I also work with people with anxiety and depression. Often there is a focus on feelings of shame and developing self-acceptance, which may have been damaged by past traumas. I work with clients who want to improve their day to day lives and are willing to practise new skills between therapy sessions. I also see people who want to work on past traumas.

People reach out to me when they're tired of not feeling good enough. You may not know why you feel like you do and that's okay. Comparing yourself to others may make you doubt yourself. You may struggle to say "no" and worry about what people think. You may feel anxious and/or stressed and find it difficult to switch off properly. Constantly overthinking situations can be exhausting. You may want to find better ways of coping and feel more in control of life. Being more aware of your feelings and needs can help with communication. Putting in boundaries for yourself can improve relationships with those around you.

I am a CBT therapist interested in helping you overcome past traumas so you can have happy and fulfilling relationships with yourself and others. Whether you describe yourself as a people-pleaser, perfectionist, worrier, anxious-preoccupied or dismissive-avoidant, I would love to work with you. I can help you explore the impact of early life events on your sense of self and teach you ways to have better relationships, whether that’s by learning to say no, stopping worrying, having healthier boundaries, being more confident, or finding meaning in life. Sometimes feelings of being lost, angry, sad and fearful may appear without reason. Sometimes we know exactly where it's coming from. You may be seeking something, some awareness, meaning or acceptance. You could feel stuck in patterns, unable to move through them or understand where they may be coming from. Maybe it's time to tend to those parts of you that are hurting from what you've been through. To heal, we need to be seen, heard and understood in an environment that we can feel safe in. Together, we can create that and explore and process through those current and past issues.

Sexual Abuse Counsellors

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
