Sometimes we lose our way a little in life. Perhaps there are aspects in your life that are causing you anxiety, distress, or preventing you from moving forward? In a world full of uncertainty we can often feel overwhelmed, fearful and unsure where to move next. Redundancy, illness, relationship issues, depression and anxiety can often leave us feeling unsafe and lost, and sometimes we just need a helping hand in working through these emotions and patterns in order to start to make sense of the world and ourselves again.

If you find yourself stuck, in a job, in a relationship, in any repetitive behaviour patterns, then perhaps you are ready to start understanding why. If you are prepared and ready to explore your internal world and are committed to being reflective and honest with yourself, then you have come to the right place. Although this kind of work may sound quite demanding it is potentially very rewarding and will bring long lasting benefits.

People come to therapy for lots of reasons, often motivated by a desire for something new; something better; sometimes uncertain how best to make and manage change; often powerfully resistant to it. You may want to understand how you came to be where you are, or how to stop repeating unhelpful patterns. You may or may not have a specific aim in mind, but you probably would like to feel engaged, and hopeful and alive. Whatever your reason, there's the idea that speaking with an experienced professional should provide relief and insight.

Welcome! I have been working as a counsellor and psychotherapist since 1998 and work as a supervisor too, with practices in Exeter and London and online. I believe that many of our difficulties develop due to our early life and past experiences, including trauma. We repeat patterns in our lives hoping that things will get resolved. Sometimes these patterns are unhelpful to us. Therapy offers, in a confidential and safe space, the possible facilitation of being able to recognise these patterns and approach them from a new perspective. (more detailed information can be found on www.psycho-dynamic.co.uk)

Something has brought you here. Maybe it’s stress that won’t let up, anxiety that has made the world feel smaller or a loss that has changed the shape of things. Maybe you’re not sure exactly what it is - only that something needs to shift. I work with young people (16+) and adults navigating stress and anxiety, trauma, relationship difficulties and the harder chapters of life. Many of the people I see are functioning on the outside while carrying something heavier underneath - tired in a way sleep doesn’t fix, holding it together but not quite themselves.

I am currently the course leader for the Guild's diploma in psychoanalytic supervision.
Yet I also know, as a long-time meditator, that paying attention in a non-judgemental fashion enables previously unbearable experiences to be borne and new possibilities discovered. I provide a safe space in which these experiences can be explored. I also worked for many years in NHS hospitals and understand the challenges of working in large organisations

Throughout my career, I’ve worked across both private and community settings, including managing and delivering specialist programmes for the Amy Winehouse Foundation and the Priory Group. In therapy I support clients to make long term meaningful changes to relationships with substance, sex, food or relationships. I also work with trauma and complex family dynamics.

As a Clinical Psychologist, people often come to me when they are feeling stuck in patterns and want to make sense of the difficulties in their life. My approach is reIational and collaborative. Through this, I hope to provide a curious, containing and hopeful space to find alternate ways of being. I work with adults, and also have expertise working with young people and families, who may be experiencing difficulties with mood, anxiety, trauma, relationships, or identity. I believe it is important to recognise how our sociopolitical and cultural context shape and contribute to distress, and take a neuroaffirmative approach.

Does psychoanalytic therapy work?
Psychoanalytic therapy derives from the work of Sigmund Freud. In this type of therapy, discovering buried thoughts and emotions from the unconscious will help a person work through their difficulties and negative behaviours. Research shows that psychoanalytic therapy can be highly effective, with patients reporting improvement in mood, quality of life, and overall well-being.

How long are people typically in psychoanalytic therapy?
Traditional psychoanalysis is in-depth and is conducted in five sessions every week. Today, modern psychoanalytic therapy is less intense and normally incorporates as few as one or two sessions a week. In some cases, positive change can occur quickly. However, if the condition, difficulty, or behaviour is deep-seated, improvement may require many months or years of therapy.

Is psychoanalytic therapy suitable for young people?
Children and adolescents can benefit from this type of therapy. Many kids and teens are often unable to form and communicate their thoughts and emotions. Psychoanalytic therapy uses specific techniques such as dream analysis, symbolism, and free association or word association; all of which can be useful tools for less-communicative young people. Through this therapy, a patient will hopefully make connections between what they feel inside and how the world works outside.

Can psychoanalytic therapy be done online?
Modern-day psychoanalytic therapy is very different from traditional psychoanalysis. While an individual can sit face-to-face with the psychoanalyst for multiple sessions a week, they do not have to. Today, psychoanalytic therapy can be effectively conducted online or by phone. The key is that the individual confronts what is repressed and avoided, and this can be done whether in person or over online video.
