We come to therapy for all sorts of different reasons. Perhaps the most important thing to say is that there is no single, “right” reason. You might come to therapy because things have happened to you, such as a death, a divorce or a loss of something else, like a job. Or perhaps you have specific symptoms or feelings of depression , anxiety, stress, anger, low self-esteem or a lack of confidence. Or you may be experiencing issues in relationships, with people or with other things, e.g. food. Or it may be the case that you can’t pinpoint what’s wrong, things just don’t feel right and life simply isn’t going the way you expected.

You may have an idea of what you would like support with, but often it can be hard to define how you're feeling. An initial assessment allows us to unpack your difficulties & start to make sense of things. I have 19 years experience of helping people with OCD, phobias, social anxiety, generalised anxiety, worry, panic, emetophobia, health anxiety, depression , body dysmorphic disorder, habit disorders (e.g. skin picking & hair pulling), low self-esteem, perfectionism, stress & insomnia. It is common to experience more than one of these at the same time; I can support you to understand the relationship between them & where to start.

Taking that first step, seeking help with difficult feelings, thoughts or experiences takes courage and strength. Offering a non judgemental, compassionate and supportive space I commit to ensuring you have control of the pace and subject matter you bring, and to work with you to find new perspectives, build trust in your own judgement and a stronger sense of self. Hey! What brings you here? What hurts? What are your struggles? What keeps you stuck? Is it a relationship with a loved one? A parent, a child, a partner or a friend? Is it depression , overwhelming feelings of sadness, loss of joy, sleepless nights, no desire to get out of bed, avoiding friends or family members? Is it anxiety or panic attacks, intrusive thoughts, constantly worrying, creating worst scenarios? Is it a sense of not feeling good enough, comparing yourself to others in a negative light, second guessing your actions, feeling judged, having a sense that your existence is a waste of time?

As a Clinical Psychologist with over 13 years of experience, I have been privileged to work with individuals of all ages, and who present with a variety of challenges including anxiety, trauma, depression , and relational difficulties.
Personal challenges occur through every stage of life, and they can be difficult to manage alone. In fact, our emotions can lead us to push others away, and isolate ourselves when we may be most in need. Tuning in to how we feel and asking for support is an important first step, and through an initial session we can understand your feelings and perspective and think together about a way forward; importantly this can be your opportunity to see if I am the right ‘fit’ for you. I seek to create a safe and confidential space, developing a trusting relationship so that together we can approach and reach your goals.

Life events, family and work can all have an impact on our daily lives and leave us feeling confused, anxious and alone in the world. When you feel stuck or unable to move forward, counselling can provide the space and time needed to talk freely and share how you truly feel. At different stages in life many people suffer from low mood or depression and others can experience a lack of emotion or drive in their life and often feel unable to understand or explain why. Asking for help and finding the right person to talk to can be daunting and finding the words to explain how you feel can be difficult.

Depression Counsellors
Depressive disorders are characterized by persistent feelings of sadness and worthlessness and a lack of desire to engage in formerly pleasurable activities. Depression is not a passing blue mood, which almost everyone experiences from time to time, but a complex mind/body illness that interferes with everyday functioning. It not only darkens one's outlook, it is commonly marked by sleep problems and changes in energy levels and appetite. It alters the structure and function of nerve cells so that it disrupts the way the brain processes information and interprets experience.

Despite feelings of hopelessness and worthlessness, depression is a treatable condition. It can be treated with psychotherapy. As with many illnesses, the earlier treatment begins, the more effective it can be and the greater the likelihood that recurrence can be prevented.

Psychotherapy addresses the thinking patterns that precipitate depression, and studies show that it prevents recurrence. Drug therapy is often helpful in relieving symptoms, such as severe anxiety, so that people can engage in meaningful psychotherapy.
