Does your child struggle to talk about their thoughts and feelings? Do they struggle to identify their emotions? Art Therapy could help. In Art Therapy sessions, we use art, play and movement to create a safe space to explore thoughts and feelings without pressure. Art Therapy has been shown to benefit clients by reducing symptoms of anxiety, low mood and supporting emotional regulation. Children and young people can begin to understand their emotions and learn how to better communicate with those around them.

I know from my own experience that it is not easy to face trauma. From my own experience, outwardly, I was showing my strong self. Full of confidence and resilience, to please the society that is often judgemental about how I presented myself. I behaved in a manner people around me expected – to be strong and to rise above what had happened and be that bigger person. Deep down, however, I was experiencing something very different. I was losing confidence in myself and began to experience shame – a painful feeling that I was somehow flawed, broken and unworthy of love and belonging.

I support young people aged 13 and above who feel overwhelmed by emotions, friendship changes, school pressure, or experiences that leave them unsure how to cope. Many come to me with anxiety, low mood, social struggles, or feeling misunderstood. I offer a calm, non‑judgmental space where they can talk openly, explore what’s really going on, and build confidence in their own voice. Together we develop practical tools that help them understand their feelings, strengthen resilience, and move forward with clarity.

Hello, my name is Helen and firstly I would like to say that I understand that life can be difficult to navigate and at times can overwhelm you. It can be hard to understand and come to terms with, you may feel stuck and alone with no one to turn to and you may be seeking counselling for any number of reasons but there is usually an underlying sense that "things are going wrong” or we are “unable to cope”. As a person-centred therapist I offer the space and time to allow you to explore what is happening for you and to help you find a way to make sense of feelings and reactions to life events.

Hi there, and thank you for taking the time to view my profile. My name is Kathryn, and I am a clinical psychologist based in Lichfield. I have been working in the NHS since 2010, and during this time, I have had the privilege of being able to meet and work with so many different people, all with their own unique stories, and all needing help in some way. The work is never the same, but I hope that I am always able to make a difference to the lives of the people that I work with, and I always learn something from them too, which I am eternally grateful for.

Sexual Abuse Counsellors
How do therapists treat sexual abuse?
A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?
Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?
Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?
As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
