Are you struggling with a pattern of behaviour or a relationship that you know is harmful, but you can’t seem to move on, or change things for the better? Through working with you in a safe, accepting way I can help you understand how your past experiences have been negatively affecting you in the present, so you gain a fresh perspective on your problems. Many of my clients are people who have lived with emotional or mental health challenges and are ready to find a gentler way forward. They may feel weighed down by the past, unsure how it has shaped their choices, yet hopeful for something different. What my clients long for is understanding, compassion, and a safe space to be heard without judgement. Their goals are often to accept their past with kindness, reconnect with what matters most, and create a more present, fulfilling, and balanced life.

Do you feel highly anxious or constantly on edge? Perhaps you know that on paper your life is good but it simply doesn't feel this way. Many clients come for counselling and EMDR because they feel easily triggered, overwhelmed and live in fear that the worse will happen. For others, the impact of trauma on their relationships or work brings them to therapy. I'm Nikki, a neurodivergent counsellor and EMDR therapist. I offer trauma informed counselling and EMDR in Sheffield and online, for adults experiencing anxiety, emotional exhaustion, overwhelm, social anxiety and the lasting impact of difficult experiences.

Counselling is not a one-size-fits-all approach, so I am very mindful of providing a service that meets the needs of the people I support and work with. If you are unsure whether counselling is right for you and would like to understand a little more about how I work, please reach out and book an intro call. I am always happy to share the ways I work and would be keen to understand what you would like to get out of counselling. I really believe that clients are the experts in their own lives and need a space where they can be witnessed, seen, and heard. I aim to offer a space that feels safe, contained and emotionally held.

How effective is treatment for insomnia?
The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.

Are there specific medications for sleep problems?
There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.

Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?
There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.

What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?
Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
