Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) Counselling in Aylesbury
Hi I’m Mark,
I offer a warm, empathic and positive approach to support those facing stress, anxiety, trauma, low mood, or a sense of feeling stuck.
With a previous background in high-pressure roles and experience across a wide range of therapeutic techniques, I understand the challenges of both personal and professional life. I don’t believe in being a silent therapist—I actively engage, as I believe strong rapport is key. Together, we work toward balance, personal growth, and a deeper sense of harmony.

I also have experience working with clients managing neurodivergent traits, such as ADHD, helping them navigate emotional regulation, executive functioning, and self- acceptance.
I tailor sessions to suit your individual needs. Using a blend of evidence-based techniques, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and strength-focused reflection, I can help you build effective coping strategies, develop stronger communication and relationship skills, and explore the patterns and experiences, often rooted in childhood.

I work with adults and young people, who are facing the challenges of living with trauma, grief, experiencing anxiety, stress, low self-esteem, and relationship difficulties. I specialise in working with neurodivergent clients - whether formally diagnosed or not. Many clients come to me feeling stuck, tired and/or misunderstood. Using an integrative, person-centred approach, we create a space to connect and explore, at your pace. Together we make sense of your experiences, build coping strategies, recognise your strengths, and move forward with greater clarity and confidence.

I want to sit with you as you reconnect with your inner strength, build resilience, and move toward a life that makes sense to you, meaningful, balanced, and truly your own. Starting counselling can feel daunting, I want you to know that you don’t have to have everything figured out before you start, I didn't. You simply need a space where you are seen, heard, and respected, exactly as you are. Therapy doesn't work because I have the 'right' answers, it works because over time, we work together building a safe theraputic relationship, which allows difficult feelings, thoughts and experiences to be explored at your pace.

I often draw on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy ( ACT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), somatic approaches, trauma-focused rescripting, mindfulness and emotional processing.
Therapy is a partnership — a space to explore life’s challenges, openly and honestly. Therapy is centred on you and its where important changes can begin. We’ll bring curiosity to your thoughts, feelings and behaviours — and how certain patterns may be keeping you stuck. From there, we’ll work towards lasting changes with more clarity and confidence.

Maybe you're exhausted from carrying something that was never yours to carry. Going over situations on a loop -what you think you should have said, done, prevented. Flinching at a tone of voice or touch. Memories that resurface and pull shame and guilt to the surface, as raw as the day it happened. Lying awake after a nightmare, heart racing, telling yourself you should be over this by now. You say yes when you mean no. You keep people at a distance to stay safe, yet ache for real connection. You tell yourself you're broken, unlovable, not good enough. You're holding it together on the outside but inside, you're still just surviving

I work with people who feel held back by psychological barriers from doing the things that matter to them, or who want to turn those activities into a path for personal growth. Whether you’re a performer chasing excellence, a professional levelling up in your career, a recreational exerciser trying to get consistent, someone working to get healthier, or anyone who wants to use their chosen pursuit as a vehicle for deeper self-development, I’ll help you break through what’s stopping you and engage in life in a way that brings you meaning.

My main therapeutic approaches are Acceptance and Commitment Therapy ( ACT) and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT).
Just as you may need specialist treatment and rehabilitation for medical symptoms following injury and illness, I believe that effective, evidence-based psychological interventions should also be available, when needed. I am a HCPC registered Highly Specialist Clinical Psychologist specialising in working with adults struggling with the emotional impacts of physical injury and illness. Many of the people I work with have not spoken with a Psychologist before and I know it can feel daunting to reach out. My priority is to create a trusting therapeutic relationship, where you feel able to speak openly.

Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) Counsellors
How does acceptance and commitment therapy work?
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy encourages a person to listen to their self-talk. A person’s inner dialog can be indicative of how they treat themselves. ACT also encourages self-compassion; this can lead to a better understanding of negative thought patterns and emotional states. This understanding can then lead the individual to needed behavior change.
What are the goals of acceptance and commitment therapy?
The goal of acceptance and commitment is to expand a person’s psychological flexibility, a trait that encourages an individual to live in the present moment and to accept all their thoughts, feelings, and emotions, even ones that are difficult such as sadness and anxiety. In ACT, this acceptance is congruent with the individual’s values and beliefs.
Does acceptance and commitment therapy work for depression?
Acceptance and commitment therapy is effective for depression because it allows the individual to view their discomfort and suffering differently. Depressive feelings about relationship heartaches, for example, are a part of life. A despondent person learns to let go of their struggles and instead view their painful thoughts and feelings with compassion. This will lead the individual toward positive change.
How long are people typically in acceptance and commitment therapy?
A typical acceptance and commitment therapy session is 50 minutes long with one session per week. Treatment for common problems such as anxiety, depression, or relationship difficulties can last between eight weeks to four months. However, more severe cases may require more than one session a week and/or a longer time frame for treatment.
