Life is full of events, relationships, stresses and strains and all these impact on us in many different ways. It can affect all the important things to us such as school, work, relationships and our own perception of ourselves. This can be tiring and overwhelming. Fortunately, it doesn’t have to be this way and I believe strongly that a person can benefit from having a space to discuss their feelings and develop ideas and strategies to improve their emotional wellbeing.

I specialise in treating OCD and anxiety disorders using a mix of evidence based CBT and ERP (Exposure & Response Prevention) to help you make sense of your difficulties and create meaningful change towards the life you want to lead.
If you’re struggling with the relentless grip of OCD or anxiety then you’ll know how exhausting it is to feel trapped in daily cycles of obsessive overthinking, repetitive behaviours, doubts, scary thoughts, self criticism and shame. I understand how these can turn, seemingly simple everyday moments, into overwhelming, exhausting battles with apparently no way out. You might be scared to even share some of the content of your thoughts for fear of being judged. I am experienced in helping people understand OCD & anxiety and break these cycles so that you can move towards living a life that feels meaningful and fulfilling again.

Hi, my name is Jeanette. Life can be challenging, difficult & stressful at times, affecting how we feel emotionally. We can become anxious, worried, stressed, depressed or just generally feel overwhelmed. In order to manage how we are feeling, we can develop unhelpful thinking & behaviours which can hinder our growth, leading to us becoming stuck in vicious cycles. By understanding & recognising our unhelpful thinking & behaviours we can start to look at ways to modify these to improve how we feel. Therapy can help you gain control over thoughts & behaviours; develop healthier coping strategies; build self-confidence & resilience.

Exposure Response Prevention (ERP) Counsellors

Do I need exposure and response prevention therapy?

Many clients decide to seek help for obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviours when these symptoms are distressing enough to disrupt everyday life. Any thoughts or behaviours that cause friction in close relationships are also worth addressing. In addition, the client’s symptoms don’t have to be severe for them to benefit from ERP therapy.

Is exposure and response prevention therapy part of cognitive behavioural therapy?

Exposure and response prevention is one specific type of CBT that focuses on behavioural change in response to triggering stimuli. It is related to exposure therapy but adds an additional component of preventing compulsive and harmful responses.

How long does exposure and response prevention therapy take?

While every patient is different, exposure and response prevention therapy typically lasts around 12 sessions, although some treatments can take longer. A therapist will determine if the treatment is complete based on how the client faces their fears, particularly the strongest ones. When a client feels less anxiety about stimuli that once evoked terror or distress, that is generally an indication that they are nearing the end of ERP therapy.

What are the limitations of exposure and response prevention therapy?

The most common pitfalls of exposure and response prevention therapy include not addressing a client’s core fears, allowing the client to avoid their most distressing stimuli, and using imaginary exposure when the client requires real-life exposure (and vice versa). ERP therapy is most effective when the client commits to the full course of treatment; if the client stops early or doesn’t practice what they have learned outside of therapy sessions, they are less likely to have successful outcomes.
