I have been offering clients support with their mental health challenges for many years and offer an holistic approach which is grounded in a Person Centered structure. Sessions are held in my relaxed and comfortable office and an initial session is offered at a reduced rate in order that prospective clients may explore whether they feel that working with me might offer them a safe and confidential environment where they might feel comfortable enough to explore what may be challenging and uncomfortable issues.

Freedom is that time in space when you are allowed to be truly yourself – a time to do what you want, when you want it and not be shackled by others agenda’s. This singular word is extremely precious and valuable to me because there have been times when I felt I had no freedom. My aim is to work with you in a holistic way, taking into account mind, body and spirit. My training allows me to tailor make the therapy to you at any individual time. I work with a variety of issues and believe that everyone has the capability for change in their lives.

My counselling and voluntary sector experience has focused primarily on those going through life transitions: including cancer diagnosis, bereavement and emotional challenges before and after becoming a parent.
I offer short and long term counselling to adults - providing a non-judgemental and empathetic space to be truly heard.  My specialisms are times of life transitions, particularly bereavement and new parenthood. I trained integratively but primarily work from a person-centred space. This means that I believe you are the expert in knowing what you need. However, I understand from personal experience that this internal voice can sometimes feel lost or silenced and having another person there to validate, listen and support your process can make a real difference.

I have extensive experience of caring for people who have undergone life changing surgery, and patients with a diagnosis of cancer.
Hello, my name is Sarah. I am a Person Centred Counsellor working in the Nottingham area. It is often said that choosing to seek help and support through counselling is the hardest step. I agree, and would say it is the bravest decision, often made at the most difficult of times. I believe the Counselling room should be a place where you can discuss the issues of greatest importance to you, in confidence and without fear of judgement. Because I am passionate about the work a client and I do, and believie that our working alliance is the key ingredient to success

Hi, I'm looking forward to hearing from you! I want to hear your concerns and support you to work towards the things that are most important in your life. I feel that therapy should happen in a friendly, nurturing space in which you feel safe and comfortable to bring anything you want to talk about and work on. I usually suggest exercises and other resources to complete in between sessions in order to keep the work progressing. As an Accredited EMDR Therapist as well as a clinical psychologist, I am able to use the therapy approach most appropriate for your concerns.

You might be feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or disconnected from yourself. Perhaps you’re carrying past experiences that still affect you, struggling with self-doubt, or feeling like you don’t quite fit in. Maybe your emotions feel too big—or completely out of reach. You might be battling with intrusive thoughts, patterns of behaviour that don’t serve you, or a deep need for understanding and acceptance. You want to feel heard, valued, and understood. You crave a space where you can explore your emotions without fear of judgment.

How does cancer affect mental health?

A cancer diagnosis is a major life event that can significantly influence the mental health of any individual. Being diagnosed with cancer often introduces a sense of uncertainty about the future, which can cause clients to experience symptoms of anxiety, depression, and significant distress. Many cancer patients may also worry about the toll that their diagnosis may have on their family, their physical health, their job, and their financial situation. The compounding of such stressors can also decrease mental health in clients and may lead to additional symptoms that can influence mental health, such as sleeping difficulties or social withdrawal.

What is the best psychological therapy for cancer patients?

The best type of psychological therapy for cancer patients is highly dependent on the needs of the individual. The therapy type that a client benefits from may also depend on what stage of the cancer journey they are in. Recently diagnosed cancer patients, for instance, may benefit from therapies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), which can help clients develop skills to manage the emotional distress that comes with a cancer diagnosis. Alternatively, cancer patients further along in their journey may benefit from therapies like Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) or other forms of mindfulness therapy to help manage symptoms or physical pain associated with treatment. Clients may also consider group therapy, which offers cancer patients an opportunity to receive support from other individuals dealing with a cancer diagnosis.

Are there any risks or drawbacks in going to therapy while dealing with cancer?

Although attending therapy while dealing with a cancer diagnosis can be helpful, one major concern for cancer patients can be the financial cost of seeking therapy. Many therapists are out-of-network, meaning they do not accept insurance, and thus clients are expected to pay the entirety of the session fee. Since many cancer patients may be out of work as a result of their diagnosis or cancer treatment regimen, the costs of therapy sessions can be substantial. Luckily, many cancer centers and local clinics may offer free or substantially reduced-cost counselling services to cancer patients and their families. In addition, cancer patients may be eligible for grants or other forms of funding from local agencies and nonprofits to seek therapy for their cancer diagnosis. Such opportunities can be very helpful for cancer patients, as they allow clients to obtain the benefits of therapy without the financial strain.

How long does cancer therapy typically last?

The length of cancer therapy depends on the needs of each client. In some cases, cancer patients may only require therapeutic support during the period following their initial diagnosis—to help manage the uncertainty and shock of a cancer diagnosis. In other cases, clients may choose to receive therapy throughout their treatment, and even following, their cancer journey. Pursuing therapy for a longer period of time can help clients develop a deeper relationship with their therapist and provide opportunity to process the challenges presented by cancer treatment, such as physical pain, and challenges associated with cancer survivorship, such as ongoing identity concerns, physical limitations, or relationship challenges.
