We sometimes find it difficult to cope with the things that life throws at us, be it relationship issues, health problems, self esteem and self doubt, anxiety, depression, panic attacks or phobias. Sometimes we just need a safe space where we can explore and talk about the things that worry us with someone who can help us find our own way through the struggle in an empathic and totally non-judgmental way. I am a fully integrative psychotherapist offering counselling and hypnotherapy in a calm, mindful and supportive environment.

You may have been feeling more overwhelmed lately, stuck in your own thoughts or simply not quite like yourself. Sometimes there is a clear reason for this, such as anxiety, low mood or relationship difficulties. Other times it is harder to explain, just a sense that things have become more difficult to manage than they used to be. You do not need to have everything figured out before starting counselling. I offer a calm, supportive space to talk things through and make sense of what is going on, working at your pace and focusing on what feels most important to you.

If you are coping with high levels of anxiety or depression, if past traumatic experiences are interfering in your ability to manage the present and sleep is problematic then this can change.
My approach is practical, collaborative, measurable and cost effective (as few sessions as possible). The Human Givens approach uses the latest information from neuro-scientists on how the brain works; recent findings from psychologists and knowledge of which therapeutic interventions work effectively.

How effective is treatment for insomnia?
The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.

Are there specific medications for sleep problems?
There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.

Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?
There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.

What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?
Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
