Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) Counselling in Altrincham

Psychologist, DCounsPsych, HCPC - Couns. Psych.
As I often say to people, awareness is choice: if we understand what we feel and why, then we have the knowledge to act.
I believe there is no reason why we can't all live enjoyable, meaningful lives. Unfortunately, for reasons often out of our control, we can get blown off course. As a qualified Counselling Psychologist, I consider it a great privilege to work with people who are struggling with their emotional and mental health. I place the therapeutic relationship at the centre of my practice. Only when we feel safe is there room to grow.

Therapy With Amber
Psychotherapist, MSc, MBABCP
Therapy with me is grounded in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), while also drawing from Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy ( ACT), and Internal Family Systems (IFS).
Many clients come to therapy feeling stuck, overwhelmed by anxiety, navigating a late ADHD diagnosis, or processing the impact of a significant life event. Often, we find ourselves repeating patterns we don’t fully understand, outwardly competent, high performing, yet internally disconnected from a sense of satisfaction or happiness. As a CBT psychotherapist, I combine evidence-based approaches with genuine curiosity and compassion. I offer a safe, supportive space where we can gently explore your experiences, make sense of what’s happened, and work collaboratively to create meaningful lifelong change.

Sometimes we can feel stuck and need a safe space to explore ourselves and what we’re going through. A space where we can rebuild into a more empowered version of who we are or simply deconstruct to uncover our authentic inner self. Sometimes, it’s about finding our voice to hear ourselves and to be heard. Other times, it’s about carefully ending a chapter in a meaningful and harmonious way that honors the versions of ourselves we’ve been, while starting a new chapter full of hope and curiosity. Whatever life brings, therapy offers the quiet, sensitive support needed to process both the highs and lows.

Your OCD will be understood and treated from multiple angles (CBT/ERP, ACT and EMDR).
You've tried everything to "fix" your OCD. You've read self-help books, googled all sorts, promised to try harder tomorrow. But here's what you've discovered: the more you fight it, the worse it gets. The checking spirals. The avoidance spreads. The intrusive thoughts get louder and louder. You're exhausted from battling your own mind, and you're wondering if maybe you're just broken. Here's the truth: you're not broken. Your brain is doing exactly what brains do, it's trying to keep you safe, just in a not so useful way. The pathways back to the life you want are still there; you just need someone who can help you see them again.

Many of the people I work with feel stuck in patterns they understand intellectually but cannot seem to change. They may struggle with anxiety, low self-worth, people-pleasing, perfectionism, relationship difficulties, trauma, or the lasting effects of earlier experiences. Some have had previous therapy and gained insight, yet still find themselves reacting in ways they would like to change. Through EMDR and attachment-informed therapy, I help clients process the experiences that continue to influence the present and create lasting change.

I draw on evidence-based approaches — EMDR, CBT, ACT and Compassion-Focused Therapy — tailored to you rather than a one-size-fits-all method.
Are you feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or burdened by life's challenges? Many people I work with are hardworking professionals who carry more than they let on. From the outside your life may look fine, but inside something hasn't felt right for a while. Perhaps you're struggling with depression, anxiety, low self-worth, or patterns in relationships that keep repeating. For others it's more specific — trauma that still surfaces, or the weight of a long-term or life-changing health condition. You don't need to be in crisis, or have it all figured out. Often, simply knowing something needs to change is reason enough to reach out.

Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) Counsellors
How does acceptance and commitment therapy work?
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy encourages a person to listen to their self-talk. A person’s inner dialog can be indicative of how they treat themselves. ACT also encourages self-compassion; this can lead to a better understanding of negative thought patterns and emotional states. This understanding can then lead the individual to needed behavior change.

What are the goals of acceptance and commitment therapy?
The goal of acceptance and commitment is to expand a person’s psychological flexibility, a trait that encourages an individual to live in the present moment and to accept all their thoughts, feelings, and emotions, even ones that are difficult such as sadness and anxiety. In ACT, this acceptance is congruent with the individual’s values and beliefs.

Does acceptance and commitment therapy work for depression?
Acceptance and commitment therapy is effective for depression because it allows the individual to view their discomfort and suffering differently. Depressive feelings about relationship heartaches, for example, are a part of life. A despondent person learns to let go of their struggles and instead view their painful thoughts and feelings with compassion. This will lead the individual toward positive change.

How long are people typically in acceptance and commitment therapy?
A typical acceptance and commitment therapy session is 50 minutes long with one session per week. Treatment for common problems such as anxiety, depression, or relationship difficulties can last between eight weeks to four months. However, more severe cases may require more than one session a week and/or a longer time frame for treatment.
