I also specialise in working with anxiety disorders, in particular obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
Well done for taking the first step in looking for support. Reaching out can feel daunting, and many people spend a long time wondering whether therapy is the right step for them. The fact that you’re here suggests that something in your life may not be feeling quite right, and you’re beginning to think about change. I have worked in mental health for over 17 years and have been a qualified counsellor for more than 13 years. My experience includes working with adults and young people facing complex and long-standing difficulties to find some sense of relief and control in their lives.

Counselling can be an extra support; giving children the added time and space needed to work through their worries and feelings.
Life brings all sorts of challenges and some can be much harder to overcome than others. Most adults can remember a time when they were dealing with a situation so tough that everyday living became more challenging than usual. For children and young people, who have not had time to develop their own coping strategies, such situations are even more difficult to cope with. Many children who are having a difficult time do not know what it is that they are feeling and cannot put it into words. Counselling for children and young people might be slightly different to the traditional idea of therapy you may have in mind.

Many of the people I work with feel weighed down by constant worry, low mood, or the sense that they’re just not being heard or understood.
Clients often tell me they value my warmth and realness. I bring curiosity, empathy, and a down-to-earth approach, using appropriate humour when it helps ease the process. My biggest priority is for you to leave feeling seen, heard, and cared for – and to have a clear sense that your time and emotional energy in therapy is moving you towards feeling better.

In my opinion a free consultation is a must so you can get a chance to discuss what’s going on for you and how counselling could help. It’s also a chance to get a feel if we are a good match with no obligation to continue. I would be glad to hear from you to see if I can help you. "What to expect? I have a flexible approach to our sessions, I offer brief intervention work for short term problems which may be a reaction to a life event. Longer term therapy for difficulties you may have been experiencing over a long period of time.

The anxiety, the stress, the emptiness underneath.
Mind Shifting works across your thoughts, emotions, mental images, and body simultaneously. When the emotional weight behind the problem dissolves, it stops being a problem entirely. The behaviour built around it loses its reason to exist. Problems present for years can clear in five to ten minutes. You walk away lighter, clearer, and in control.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

What are the most common types of treatment for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
