I have experience working with trauma, anxiety, depression and relationships and so work with families, children, individuals and couples.
Hi, I’m Emma and I offer a compassionate and containing space for us to explore what it is that has brought you into therapy and how we can understand what is needed for you to have the full life experiencer that you desire. I offer an eclectic approach to therapy, depending on the needs you are coming for and the age, circumstance and appropriateness of how we will work together. I believe the relationship we hold is at the centre of the healing process and so I will be focused on what that needs to be for you and how that needs to be developed with others too.

You're under pressure to 'hold it all together', but underneath there may be anxiety, low mood, or strain in your relationships. Caught between external achievements and what you're experiencing internally, things may look successful on paper, but inside there may be exhaustion, self-doubt, or a loss of meaning. Constant pressure, high standards, or a particular challenge at work or in your personal life may have become overwhelming. You might feel you should be coping better or managing this without help. What you're looking for is space to talk, understand what's happening, and find a more sustainable path forward.

I am an experienced integrative therapist offering in-person sessions in Oxford or Cheltenham. For over ten years I have worked with a wide range of emotional difficulties and life situations; anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, lack of purpose and more. Problems which feel too much to deal with alone or with close ones. Times of change can also be an impetus for starting therapy and I have worked with people experiencing transitions in their life (be it relationships, career, age and more) and who want space and time to re-orientate, discover or rediscover their sense of self and how they want to move forwards.

You may feel you are not getting the most out of your life and are unsure why this is. Perhaps you feel it's hard to feel good about yourself, or you feel stuck. Relationships may not be as fulfilling as you desire. You may relish the opportunity to make a real commitment to your personal growth. I work online or F2F in North Wales. Often my way of working appeals to those who are interested in the arts and/or the spiritual realm and those who appreciate deeper ways of working, in safe and supportive relationship. Looking for psychoanalytic training patients currently as I deepen my work practice.

Seeking psychological support can be a daunting task. That search for support is often undertaken when something has happened and we feel overwhelmed. Sometimes difficult memories or experiences become more troubling. Sometimes life feels tougher than we expect it to be. For me, therapy is a space that has to feel safe, supportive and helpful. It has to focus on things that are important for you. That should be supported by a professional who is flexible in what can best help you, right now.

Are you feeling a growing distance in your relationship — lonely, unheard, or going round in the same difficult patterns? Maybe communication has broken down, trust feels shaky, or life just feels overwhelming and it’s starting to affect how you connect with the people around you. You don’t have to work it out on your own. Relationships can be a real source of comfort, but when things aren’t working, it can feel confusing and painful, and it often spills into other areas of life. You might be dealing with conflict at home, a relationship ending, anxiety, low mood, or just a constant sense that things don’t feel quite right.

I have worked in the NHS for over 20 years and I realise that therapy can be a new and unusual approach for people. I often work with folk who are finding things hard, and need a neutral form of support. I can offer direct support, teaching and practice in cognitive and behavioural techniques, or relaxation and mindfulness ideas to help. The goals that a person wants to work towards might be crystal clear to them, or they might refine these as we work together.

I have extensive experience of working with clients living with Identity problems including gender identity and couples and families who are fostering and adopting children.
Systemic Psychotherapy sees the individual in the context of the network of relationships that we live in. By focusing on relationships I can help to support individuals, couples and families to find ways in which they can make it possible to build connections with others that allow them to talk about and manage difficult feelings differently.

FAQ - About Family Therapy
What do family therapists do?
A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?
Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?
You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?
Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
