You're under pressure to 'hold it all together', but underneath there may be anxiety, low mood, or strain in your relationships. Caught between external achievements and what you're experiencing internally, things may look successful on paper, but inside there may be exhaustion, self-doubt, or a loss of meaning. Constant pressure, high standards, or a particular challenge at work or in your personal life may have become overwhelming. You might feel you should be coping better or managing this without help. What you're looking for is space to talk, understand what's happening, and find a more sustainable path forward.

Hi, I’m Emma and I offer a compassionate and containing space for us to explore what it is that has brought you into therapy and how we can understand what is needed for you to have the full life experiencer that you desire. I offer an eclectic approach to therapy, depending on the needs you are coming for and the age, circumstance and appropriateness of how we will work together. I believe the relationship we hold is at the centre of the healing process and so I will be focused on what that needs to be for you and how that needs to be developed with others too.

Admitting that we need help can often feel overwhelming, shameful, or intimidating. The process of identifying someone who can assist us may evoke similar emotions. Research indicates that the most significant predictor of successful therapy outcomes is the quality of the relationship between you and your therapist. It’s crucial to find someone you can trust—someone who will uphold confidentiality and maintain appropriate boundaries, creating a safe environment for you to be open. This will facilitate insight and understanding, empowering you to make meaningful changes to your life.

Therapy offers a safe, supportive space where you can talk openly and begin to make sense of what you’re experiencing. I work collaboratively with you and your goals, helping you gain clarity, develop coping tools, and move forward at a pace that feels right for you. Even when things feel heavy, change is possible — and together we can begin to let some light back in.

I largely work with individuals and couples who are navigating the complexities of mid-life. Typical clients may be experiencing life as new parents, as wives, husbands, partners, career professionals, or they might be embarking on mid-life changes, all of which can be extremely complex and challenging. People often reach to me because of my experience as a career professional, my training as a family mediator, and my status as a divorcee and single mother. I also have a unique approach to therapy, one which puts empathy and connection at the forefront of all I do.

Starting therapy can be daunting so it’s important that you identify a therapist and an approach to working that feels right for you. As an art psychotherapist, I am open, honest and inclusive with considerable experience supporting children, adolescents and young adults in schools and community settings. My approach to working is psychodynamic - I’m interested in how past events may have affected you, both consciously and unconsciously, influencing the way you think, feel and behave. Should talking about your experiences be too difficult, I may encourage you to try different creative techniques as an alternate means of expression.

I work with adults and young people who often appear to be coping on the outside but feel overwhelmed, stuck, or not good enough on the inside. Many of my clients are thoughtful, capable individuals who find themselves caught in patterns of overthinking, procrastination, emotional shutdown, or self-doubt. They are often drawn to therapy because something no longer feels sustainable—whether that’s anxiety, low mood, relationship difficulties, or a sense of disconnection from themselves. For many, these struggles are rooted in earlier experiences such as childhood neglect, unmet emotional needs, or trauma.

As an online therapist, I work with adults who may be feeling anxious, low or emotionally overwhelmed, perhaps carrying the impact of trauma, difficult family dynamics, relationship strain or identity struggles. You might appear capable and high-functioning on the outside yet feel stuck, disconnected or exhausted within. Maybe you are navigating grief, cultural conflict, boarding school experiences, a health diagnosis or a significant life transition. You want clarity, emotional relief and a stronger sense of self, but are unsure where to begin or how to move forward.

Whether you are looking for support through challenging times or trying to make sense of your life, talking to a professional counsellor can be really valuable when things feel overwhelming and uncertain, we all need help at times. Feelings we can’t manage or make sense of can impact on our whole sense of well-being and prevent us from living our lives fully. Counselling can help manage current situations and look at new ways of coping. It can also give us insight, understanding and perspective on past experiences.

I have been working for over 23 years with people who have a wide range of issues including, relationship and work problems, low self esteem, addictions and other forms of self harm, abuse, eating disorders, bereavement as well as people who suffer from stress and anxiety or feel low, depressed and suicidal. I am also qualified to work with couples and groups about relationships. Most of my training and work as a counsellor has been about really learning to listen to people, hearing the ‘music’ behind their words and sensing their deepest feelings, hurts, joys and fears as it is then that therapeutic healing can occur.

How can I find a therapist in Aldermaston?

Search for nearby therapists or counsellors by inputting your city, postcode, or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or postcode into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are members of the main professional associations, mainly the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). Most Psychologists in the directory are accredited members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and/or are registered in the Health and Care Professions Council (HPCP).

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement for psychotherapists and counsellors in the UK, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and experience that enable them to do so in the UK. Psychologists have earned a degree in psychology and many are members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and have completed a postgraduate qualification in a specialism. Counsellors and Psychotherapists are not required to have a psychology degree, but to belong to a professional organisation such as the BACP or UKCP, they are required to have completed a training course as well as clinical and supervision hours.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the UK could be between £30 - £60 when seeing a counsellor and £60 - £150 and up when seeing a clinical psychologist. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. The NHS Talking therapies programme offers free of charge counselling for common mental health problems like anxiety and depression. The service is available to anyone registered with a GP, though you do not necessarily need to be referred by your GP and can refer yourself directly to a Talking therapies service. The service will provide different solutions, including group and individual therapy, for a limited number of sessions which are generally up to six.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Therapists who are part of a professional organisation such as the BACP, the UKCP, or BPS are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there has been participation in a criminal act or act of terror, or if there is potential or known harm to the client or others, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
