As an integrative psychotherapist, I work from a humanistic approach, which means I view my clients holistically, considering their views, backgrounds and experiences. I believe that we all have an innate ability to develop ourselves and our potentials. Over our lifetimes, we all form ways of thinking and being to adjust to our environments. However sometimes these habits and beliefs are no longer useful and can become hurdles, preventing us from progressing. This is where contacting a psychotherapist can be your first step towards self-development.

I commonly work with clients with symptoms of PTSD and/or Eating Disorders. I also work with people with other anxiety disorders and depression. People accessing my support are often looking to come to terms with traumatic events, or may be looking to overcome issues they face with eating such as restricted eating, fear of weight gain or over eating. It may also be that clients are looking for more general stress management, worry management or to address a specific phobia. Overall, however, people are often accessing therapy to achieve a particular set of goals so that they can function better and be happier in themselves.

Hi I'm Sarah and I specialise in working anxiety, depression and trauma. Maybe you are feeling anxious, overwhelmed or exhausted. Maybe you are struggling to cope with a traumatic life event. Or maybe you are generally finding life unmanageable at the moment. At times we can lose our way unintentionally and then find it difficult to get back onto the right path. If this sounds familiar, my therapy approach can help you regain some strength, clarity and balance so that you can feel more calm and back in control of your life.

My name is Julie and I love living in the city, the hustle and bustle of life and human connection. I worked in hospitality management for 25 years and understand the pressures of working full time while running a business and a home. I believe that therapy should be an open space for us to come together and work out what is going on and how you can make some changes to make life better.

Clients who see me might be facing difficult life issues, relationship problems or feel stuck. Sometimes clients are grappling with questions of self and identity. Often my clients engage in therapy to help them with symptoms of depression, anxiety, stress and/or past trauma. Being heard in a safe, confidential space can alleviate distress, clarify feelings and experiences. This can help you to figure out the changes you want to make and move forward in life. Making such changes can be challenging, but it can also help you become more resilient and build relationships that are more meaningful to you.

Stress, anxiety, depression is no longer such a taboo subject, yet we often tell ourselves, I can cope with this myself or maybe nobody will want to listen because nobody has time, or how about I’m too ashamed and I blame myself so I will cope with this by myself...... Well I am here to offer you the space to speak the unspoken and explore worrying thoughts together. The problem might be a recent incident that has left you feeling unsettled or a long standing concern deep rooted in unresolved trauma that has affected you e.g. sleepless nights, social anxiety, fear, relationship issue, performance at work, mood, self worth.

Therapy is a safe space to explore some of the confusing or difficult thoughts and feelings that arise throughout life's challenging phases. Major life transitions, relationship issues, bereavements, self-esteem, low mood or anxiety - these are all themes that are worthwhile addressing in therapy. Additionally therapy can be an investment into understanding yourself further; what causes you to think and act in certain ways as this is the gateway to facilitating meaningful and long-lasting change.

Life can be difficult at times and it can lead us feeling overwhelmed. You may not want to share your feelings or problems with friends or family, and this might be because you don’t want them to worry or you are unsure about whether they will understand what you are going through. It does not mean you have to go through your difficulties alone. Counselling is a journey of self-discovery and it can facilitate positive change. It can be a form of self-care to help to understand yourself better and to allow yourself to live the life that you want and achieve the things you thought you won’t be able to do.

If anxiety is getting in the way of you living your life the way you want to, we can work together to change that. Anxiety can creep up on us and there doesn't need to have been a big trigger for it to have a real impact on our lives. I work with people to overcome a range of anxiety based difficulties and have a particular interest in supporting people with OCD, phobias and panic attacks. Cognitive behavioural therapy can help you understand your anxiety, become less fearful of it and find ways to tackle it. Therapy can also help you to recognise what you are already doing that is helpful - there is always more than you think!

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are members of the main professional associations, mainly the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). Most Psychologists in the directory are accredited members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and/or are registered in the Health and Care Professions Council (HPCP).

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement for psychotherapists and counsellors in the UK, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and experience that enable them to do so in the UK. Psychologists have earned a degree in psychology and many are members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and have completed a postgraduate qualification in a specialism. Counsellors and Psychotherapists are not required to have a psychology degree, but to belong to a professional organisation such as the BACP or UKCP, they are required to have completed a training course as well as clinical and supervision hours.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the UK could be between £30 - £60 when seeing a counsellor and £60 - £150 and up when seeing a clinical psychologist. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. The NHS Talking therapies programme offers free of charge counselling for common mental health problems like anxiety and depression. The service is available to anyone registered with a GP, though you do not necessarily need to be referred by your GP and can refer yourself directly to a Talking therapies service. The service will provide different solutions, including group and individual therapy, for a limited number of sessions which are generally up to six.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Therapists who are part of a professional organisation such as the BACP, the UKCP, or BPS are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there has been participation in a criminal act or act of terror, or if there is potential or known harm to the client or others, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
