I started Forging Pathways with the goal of helping others to find the path they're destined to follow. This could be anything from discovering who you truly are through our sessions, to reclaiming your life after a crisis and/or traumatic event. You may come to me with depression, anxiety, complex trauma, stress, racial identity issues and more, and I'll always do my best to encourage you and facilitate your growth. Sometimes it just takes a little support to reach a goal, and I'm dedicated to being your support.

I am a highly qualified and experienced Relationship & Sex Therapist and work with couples and individuals. I am trained in two evidence-based treatment models, each grounded in decades of research. Emotionally Focused Therapy and the Gottman Method both of which provides us with deeper understandings and knowledge of what is required to help couples build more secure, resilient and loving bonds. Couples in distress often don't know how to respond to each other in the face of emotional turmoil as a result of not getting the love they need and want from each other and can become locked into co-created patterns of disconnection.

You may know exactly what you want from counselling or it may just be a feeling that something isn't right. It might be issues arising from the past or events that are affecting you right now - whatever it is, I believe talking about it can make a real difference. Counselling can feel quite daunting at times and I will be there to listen with warmth and empathy; to be alongside you when there are tough times and to laugh with you when life feels a little lighter. Working together, we can explore what's bothering you and perhaps look at other ways of coping with life so you can move forward with confidence and optimism.

Hello, I'm Gemma (and this is my guinea pig Lucy for added cute!) Thanks for clicking on my profile. Counselling may be useful to you if you are experiencing some emotional upset or change. Maybe you are going through an immediate crisis, or have a sense of something not being quite right which is beginning to affect your day to day life. Together we can explore what's happening for you right now, consider how the past may be impacting your current reality and then start to imagine how you want your future to look.

Accepting that we're finding things difficult is often the hardest part. Throughout every stage of life we can experience times when things don’t feel right and we struggle with our relationships, or to make sense of our thoughts, feelings and world around us. This can lead to us feeling anxious, overwhelmed and struggling to communicate.

I offer autistic people and those with ADHD comprehensive, effective, flexible and affordable mental health support. As a neurodivergent person you might sometimes feel overwhelmed with anxiety, and can, as a result, end up feeling isolated and low in self-esteem, as well as in mood. However, any situation can be managed, if you have the right tools and supports. The solutions we identify can be put in place gradually, so that change is achievable. Together we can work toward you being happier and functioning better in your work and relationships, as well as life in general. I also offer couples' coaching (where one or mor are ND).

The last few years have been disorientating, changing us and the world around us. It's no wonder we're feeling more anxious and confused as we adjust and process the last few years. You may find that issues you coped with before are now magnified and more painful. Difficult experiences in your past can resurface and you may feel there is no-one you can be honest with about your thoughts. Perhaps you had an increased workload during the pandemic and are now at the stage of burnout? Whatever you are struggling with, sharing your issues in confidence, at your pace can help you gain the clarity and control you need in your life.

If you feel that you want to make changes in your life, or feel overwhelmed with what you have to cope with on a daily basis, I can help you. You know you don't want to be in the same place in a year's time but don't know what you do want out of life. You may have issues with your mental health or have been through a particularly hard time or event. I like to work with people to help them to identify and achieve their goals and to plan for their future. This can involve supporting you with counselling to address personal issues and feelings, but it is also a more practical approach that helps you to produce your life-map.

Each one of us struggles in life at one point or another. When the difficulties in life feel too much to manage on our own, counselling and psychotherapy offer a confidential and safe environment in which we can explore these difficulties and find the direction to lasting changes. Often our current difficulties have their roots in the past. Problems emerge when we stick to our old ways of coping. Counselling can help us make links to the past and find more adaptive ways of coping. It can help us to tune in to our emotions and thus understand what matters the most and what needs to be changed.

How can I find a therapist in EH4?

Search for nearby therapists or counsellors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or postcode; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or postcode into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online or over the phone can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counsellors are all licensed mental health professionals. In many countries, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counsellor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counsellors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counsellor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counselling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
