“Life doesn’t get better by chance, it gets better by change”. At times we can all feel anxious or uncertain of our future. Sometimes we need to make changes in order to improve our situation. However, the prospect of change can feel overwhelming, leaving us feeling disconnected, isolated and lonely. Hearing your thoughts out loud, with a professional, can be an opportunity to gain some clarity and begin the process of change. I truly believe that a small change in the way we think can make a big difference to the way we feel.

Are you struggling with anxiety or depression? Unhappy, experiencing relationship problems, feeling alone or held back by trauma or bereavement? Are you seeking counselling for a child or young person? Therapy can be short term, 4-6 sessions and we can work together in a highly focused way, including exploring strategies if you wish to. For some, longer term therapy is preferred. In this we can explore issues in greater depth and you can be supported to make lasting changes in your life. For children, therapy happens in the midst of play and craft activities.

Are you in a relationship but feel that something isn’t quite right: Maybe you argue a lot or don’t really communicate anymore, you are together but still feel alone? Or maybe you are trying to deal with a change, like having a baby, retiring, or moving to a new place, and that has created stress and tension in your relationship? Are you struggling with illness or bereavement? Perhaps you are no longer in a relationship but would like to work through an ending? Or maybe you would like to focus on yourself and explore what a meaningful and authentic life would look like for you?

Many things bring us to counselling. For some, it is overwhelming emotions, such as loss or anger. For others, it is painful or restrictive marital or family relationships. Some of us seek counselling because day-to-day life feels pointless or it’s dominated by anxiety. Some of us are quite stuck: for example, you may have a part of you that wants to achieve things in life but another part of you habitually sabotages your efforts.

Sometimes things in life become difficult and we have overwhelming feelings which lead to difficulties with coping with life's experiences. I am available to talk through the issues affecting individuals and help them look at ways to explore what they are experiencing and look at different ways to think, feel and behave through them. Things can change and life can be different, sometimes we just need a helping hand to see that. If you want someone to talk to or are looking to make significant changes in your life I will work alongside you to develop a relationship that will be positive, potent and protected.

Is everything okay?....... This can be a difficult question to answer. Our default response is often "yes", but deep down, for a lot of us, that's simply not true. Often we struggle to verbalise it, can be exceptionally good at denying it even exists or spend copious amounts of emotional energy keeping it at bay. Perhaps you know why you don't feel okay and perhaps you don't. Either way, I can help. I offer a safe, confidential space to allow you to explore any issues you may be experiencing. I work with individuals aged 12 and up at the moment. You may have issues with anxiety or trauma and are looking for ways to regulate yourself and work through the trauma. There may be attachment issues established in childhood that have been unhelpful in adulthood. Perhaps you require a confidential place to process distressing things you have experienced, or somewhere to take ownership of your story and change your narrative.

I work with people who are committed to exploring deeply what might be emerging through them in their longing for a different way that is more authentic to who they really are as well as concerned with what's happening on the planet. People may arrive through loss of connection, longing, grief, feeling lost, misfit, crisis, trauma, addiction, depression, illness, betrayal, relationship breakdown. There may be a deep trust felt, or a loss of trust with longing to trust again. There might be longing to connect with Nature again too.

How can I find a therapist in EH39?

Search for nearby therapists or counsellors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or postcode; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or postcode into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online or over the phone can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counsellors are all licensed mental health professionals. In many countries, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counsellor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counsellors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counsellor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counselling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
