Perhaps your doctor, friend or another health therapist has suggested you consider talking through your dilemma to help seek clarity to see your situation from a different perspective. If this sounds like you then you have come to the right place and I may be able to help you gain understanding of your situation. The symptoms you are experiencing are simply a sign something is wrong. Through collaboration I can help you.

Sometimes, being part of the LGBTQ+ community can be a very lonely existence, and we are not all ‘out and proud’ or lucky enough to feel part of a wider LGBTQ+ family. You may be experiencing isolation, shame, or perhaps you have faced rejection from your family or friends. I do not assume that your struggles are related to your sexuality or gender, but if you are trying to deal with something specific in your personal life, or are simply overwhelmed and feeling alone in your current situation, I can offer you a private and non-judgemental space for the exploration of anything which may be causing you pain.

Clients often come to see me with struggles in their relationships, symptoms of anxiety or experiences of depression. Sometimes people know of relationships, specific events, or thinking patterns that are causing them difficulties, other times they just know they are feeling low and are looking for help. Guided by my clients, I set out to establish individual goals for therapy and hope to tailor the sessions as much as possible to the person. Your sessions, will be what you need them to be, whether that is sitting with grief and silence, understanding the nervous system, or getting expressive with crayons.

It can be difficult to choose a therapist and to understand the various titles therapists go by, as well as the different types of therapies and counselling on offer. However, I personally think one of the most important factors in choosing a therapist is the fit between the client and therapist and whether the relationship feels warm and empathic. My therapeutic style is to identify and build on existing strengths and to offer a safe supportive space to explore current difficulties. Having had my own psychotherapy, I am familiar with what it feels like to be on the receiving end of therapy and I am sensitive to this during my work.

Are you weighed down by anxiety or depression? Perhaps you are going through fertility treatment and you feel an overwhelming mix of emotions - including hope and fear - and you're holding it all together - lots of spinning plates - it feels too much to carry at times. Have you given birth and the birth was difficult and you know that you need to process what happened to you, but at the same time you push the memory away so that you can get through the day - perhaps your body is different, now, since you gave birth? Perhaps you have scars, stretch marks, loose skin, a prolapse? Are you feeling lost and unsure of who you are?

Throughout our lives we all experience difficulties and challenges that sometimes we can’t manage on our own. Psychotherapy can be an extremely powerful tool to help us become more aware of who we are and gain a better understanding about our relationships with others and the situations we find ourselves in. My main approach to Psychotherapy draws on psychodynamic and attachment based principles, which involves the idea that thinking about past experiences and early childhood relationships can help make sense of current feelings, experiences, relationships and difficulties.

What happens in therapy for eating disorders?

In therapy for eating disorders, patients typically describe their eating and exercise behaviours, their patterns of eating in relation to stress, their beliefs about their body, the ways their eating behaviour affects their relationships, and their desire (or lack of it) to change. Such information helps the therapist understand the origins of the disorder and the role it plays in the patient’s life, important for guiding treatment. Attitudes and feelings about food and eating, body weight, and physical appearance are common topics of discussion throughout treatment.

What therapy types help with eating disorders?

Once any acute medical or psychiatric emergency is resolved, psychoactive medication is often prescribed, requiring the supervision of a psychiatrist. In addition, patients receive some form of nutritional counselling along with one or more forms of psychotherapy. For adolescents, family-based treatment is empirically validated and considered the first line of treatment; parents and their children meet weekly with a clinician as the adults are coached on how to nourish and psychologically support the young patient. Adults typically receive some form of individual psychotherapy, intended to resolve the cognitive and behavioural disturbances that underlie the disorder and to relieve the mood disturbances that accompany it. In addition, patients may also be helped by group therapy.

What is the goal of therapy for eating disorders?

The most immediate goal of treatment for eating disorders is to save the life of people who are on a path of starving themselves to death or engaging in eating patterns that are doing irreparable physical harm to their body. Once the acute medical danger is past, therapy is required to understand the nature of the disordered eating and/or exercise patterns, establish healthy eating behaviour, and to tackle the many erroneous beliefs and distorted self-perceptions that underlie eating disorders and continue to pose a threat to health and life. Therapy also addresses the impaired mood that not only accompanies eating disorders but intensifies the danger to health and life.

What are the limitations of therapy for eating disorders?

Therapy can be very helpful for eating disorders—but that can happen only after people recognise they have a condition that must be treated. Especially with anorexia, the distortions in self-image that accompany the disorder can keep people from acknowledging they have a problem. Individuals may in fact see their eating disorder as a badge of self-control. Those with binge-eating disorder may feel too ashamed to seek help. Therapy cannot help those who do not avail themselves of it.

How long does therapy last for eating disorders?

Because of their complexity, recovery from eating disorders is usually a long-term process—measured in months and years— often marked by setbacks and relapse. Some form of help, such as individual or group therapy, may be advisable for much of that time. It is a general rule of thumb that the longer the illness has endured and the dysregulated eating behaviour has taken root, the longer treatment is likely to be needed.
