I offer a warm, non judgemental space which allows you to examine issues around health and stress, relationships, anxiety, workplace issues, self confidence, trauma and stuck behavioural patterns. I work consistently with clients on issues around addictive behaviours and work with individuals and groups in recovery from alcohol and drug abuse. No problem is ever too small and it is often the ones you feel embarrassed to bring that are key to unlocking the problem.

I am an experienced Person-Centred Counselling Psychotherapist specialising in Psychodynamic. This gives me the flexibility to tailor different therapeutic sessions. I use insights and techniques from several different schools of counselling. The heart of my practice is “person-centred” this means that you are the expert of your own process and personal development. This approach facilitates the personal growth and building relationships; between the clients and myself to enable us to explore and utilise the client's own strengths and personal identity.

Substance Abuse, Trauma and Addiction Counsellor. 20 years in recovery. We talk and....getting "better than well".... is the goal. Just imagine! Better than the supposedly "well". Addiction is everywhere both Substance and Process, and afflicts millions. I deal with many types of addiction. Universally it presents with a kaleidoscope of personal and family suffering. It does not have to continue.

How do I work? I provide an open, non-judgemental space for you, either as an individual or as a couple, to explore and make sense of your issues, to help you move forward in life to the place you want to be. There are roughly three stages: Stage 1: Explore the problem in an empathetic, non-judgemental environment. Stage 2: Clarify the key patterns and themes and make sense of some of the contradictions; put it all into context and gain insight into yourself and your life, and how and why the same problems keep coming up. Stage 3: Use this insight to start moving towards a richer, more pleasurable life.

I am a Person Centred Therapist registered with the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). I have extensive experience working with under-represented communities and helping people understanding their behaviours. My counselling journey started a decade ago, not as a qualified counsellor, but as a client. By offering a judgment free space and the opportunity to be vulnerable, my therapist supported me on my journey of self-acceptance. It is on that connection between counsellor and client that I base my work. In my humanistic approach to therapy I believe that my clients are the experts of themselves.

I am an emotional focussed couple and family systemic psychotherapist, body dramatherapist, and clinical supervisor. I have 40 years' experience in mental health settings and 30 years in private practice. I am a warm, empathic therapist and highly value my relationship with my clients. I go on exploratory journeys with clients, with them leading and together we make meaning and sense as we navigate through difficulties and worries and at times having fun along the way. At some point the therapy stops at an agreed moment by the client when they feel they have reached a more comfortable place in their life and in their relationships.

Fear, anxiety, grief, loss and traumatic experiences can get in the way of self-acceptance and self-compassion. Without this, it is difficult to move forward with life and live well in the here and now. I work with clients to live well, whatever their circumstances and however they define living well. Our work together motivates changes in perspective, which leads to changes in feelings, thoughts, choices and behaviour. Although it is not a linear trajectory these changes can and do happen, with the right support, even in the most challenging of circumstances.

As a Chartered Clinical Psychologist I practice ISTDP (Intensive Short- Term Dynamic Psychotherapy), which is a highly effective evidence based 'attachment focused therapy' that rapidly addresses your underlying issues at an emotional level. This allows you to pay closer attention to yourself and your emotions in ‘healthier’ ways, enabling you to experience your emotions to their fullest and allowing a natural healing process to occur. Drug Abuse Counsellors

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counsellors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
