I work with all clients from all walks of life, backgrounds, professions, and presenting issues, and I have years of experience in working with trauma and sexual violence. I recognise the complexity of trauma and the impact it can have on someone’s life, that it is often multi-faceted, a complicated tapestry with no simple beginning or end. This journey may take us through your relationships (past and present), as well as deconstructing harmful myths and narratives that may have disempowered you. My specialisms also include working with LGBTQ+ and TBI clients on all issues, such as exploring gender dysphoria and discrimination.

I have a special interest in working with trauma (childhood trauma, sexual abuse, domestic violence).
Living with the impact of trauma and PTSD can make it difficult to feel safe enough to connect with others. The lasting impacts of trauma can negatively affect our mood, relationships, physical health and self esteem. Ongoing mental health difficulties can prevent us from being the person we want to be, and living the life we want to live. I offer a calm and compassionate space where you can feel safe to reflect on the experiences you have been through. We will work together to understand what has helped you to survive so far, and how to work towards a better future.

It is normal for people to experience difficulties in life. There are many ways that our body tells us that something is not right: Feeling unfulfilled Feeling stressed or anxious, feeling lonely and isolated, feeling bored, confused. It can be unsettling when we experience these feelings, but it is our natural way of alerting us to needing change. As a therapist, I am here to support you through any challenges that you may be facing. I can provide a safe, confidential, and supportive space for you to explore who you are and how you relate to others.

“You do not need magic to transform your life. You carry the power you need inside yourself already.” My name is Karen. I am a wife, mother, and daughter. I have experienced the highs and lows of life; giving me a profound insight into how therapy can reinforce a positive mindset and change lives. I am deeply compassionate towards one’s experiences and provide a consensual understanding by placing the formation of a therapeutic relationship at the forefront of my counselling method. Through individuals being treated with respect, acceptance and understanding, an open and honest relationship can be built.

Hello my name is Linda, I am an experienced psychotherapist, supervisor and trainer. I am currently accepting short and long term client work and supervision clients, to work online.   I work individually, with couples or pairs, or in small groups.  I also supervise those that offer supervision to others.  I believe relationship is key to successful therapy and supervision because it allows trust, respect and mutuality to build which results in having an open, safe space in which to work. Sometimes having the opportunity to talk with someone impartial and independent is essential.

What's the closest crocodile to your canoe? In other words, what's worrying you? Is there something feeling overwhelming that keeps you from going where you want to on your journey through life? That's your crocodile. Thankfully though, a canoe is a 2-person boat. At Canoe Counselling, I join you as a guide and help, to go at your pace, in the direction you want, for as long as we choose. Person-Centred therapy holds the idea of relationship at the very centre of the work we do together - I may offer suggestions and guidance, and will support you to the best of my ability, but ultimately you are the one who gets us there!

Hello my name is Dawn, I understand that first contact and arranging a session and coming, takes a lot of strength, Many I have found is concerned about having to go into details of the concern they coming with or having to relive maybe a trauma. See therapy as painful. Therapy does not have to be painful, you do not have to go into details if did not wish to. Goals maybe to be able to look ahead to see there is a light, to feel heard, listened to, to be acknowledged. A place to feel safe and to look at all tools resources abilities already within to come away the the past and look to future which is preferred in a healthy way.

Domestic Abuse Counsellors

What are the most effective ways to recover from domestic abuse?

Leaving an abusive relationship requires tremendous courage, so survivors in treatment should recognise that they have already completed the most important step. Still, the trauma of physical or emotional abuse can be difficult to process and overcome. Therapy can help survivors process trauma, grief, and difficult emotions, treat relevant mental health symptoms, and create a new framework for boundaries and relationships in the future. For some, support groups can also be an invaluable outlet for healing.

When should an individual seek help for domestic abuse?

Victims of intimate partner violence should seek help immediately. It can take substantial time, planning, energy, and courage to leave an abusive relationship, but starting the process—by seeking therapy, calling the domestic violence hotline, or simply confiding in a loved one—will help them get there. Those who have left abusive relationships but haven’t sought treatment can also greatly benefit from therapy to process and heal from the experience.

What are the consequences of staying in an abusive relationship?

Remaining in an abusive relationship has serious repercussions. In addition to the ongoing threat of physical danger and emotional abuse, research shows that intimate partner violence is associated with a range of mental health disorders including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and substance abuse. Therefore it’s important for individuals in an abusive relationship to seek help as soon as possible.

How can you get domestic abuse treatment for someone else?

It can be very complicated to identify and leave an abusive relationship; barriers include the threat of violence, financial instability, and family pressures. Those concerned about a loved one in an abusive relationship should talk to them about the situation, provide them with resources such as the domestic violence hotline, and introduce the idea of seeing a therapist due to their concern for the person’s safety and well-being.
