Sometimes the strength that keeps us going also becomes the armour that shuts others out. Many of us learned early on that expressing feelings was unsafe, that softness invited harm, or that anger was the only way to stay protected. Over time, this armour can harden, making us lose touch with what it was once protecting. Anger becomes a shield: strong, reliable, and exhausting to carry.
We all carry stories shaped by our histories, relationships, and the worlds we had to survive. We learn to protect ourselves in the only way we know how. When given space to slow down, to be met without judgement, to make sense of our emotional lives, the armour can soften, the shield can finally rest, and the long war with ourselves can come to an end.
I lead a multidisciplinary therapy service in Newham for young people whose lives have been shaped by trauma, exclusion, and adversity. My work recognises anger as a response not only to personal experience, but to social, political, and institutional conditions that require people to adapt and survive in environments where safety is often absent.
