Is this a time in your life that feels difficult? Life can be somewhat challenging and overwhelming at times. Counselling is a process that gives you space and time, in a confidential environment that allow you to express yourself freely enabling you, to make better sense of your feelings, emotions and fears. It is important that during this process you remain an individual and we find a way for you to express your thoughts and feelings, making it's essential to work with a flexible approach tailoring our work to your needs.

Couples Therapy: Communication is the foundation of all human relationships and how we talk to each other can be an indicator of how healthy our relationship is. Both need to take individual and collective accountability and responsibility of how they communicate and listen to each other if a relationship is to flourish. Do you have a daily or weekly check-in with your partner to check the temperature of the relationship? Or, do you only find the time to point out difficulties and problems in the relationship, resulting in no solution focused understanding of agreement and you are irritated and frustrated and need some clarity?

Are you feeling helpless, hopeless, frustrated with life, others or your self? Does life feel like too much at times? Do you find yourself wondering what is the point? Are you anxious? worrying about things that have yet to happen. Dealing with difficult feelings can feel overwhelming and may seem as if you have nowhere to turn or no way out. Deciding to see a counsellor can be a scary thought, thinking about discussing, with a stranger, private and sensitive subjects or even things that may feel shaming. However, making the decision to start therapy can be the first step to empowering yourself to make changes in your life.

People can find themselves in challenging situations, giving way to certain feelings and emotions. The prospect that something may have changed, or something stopped working can be difficult. The sense of feeling stuck, not knowing what to do can be unsettling. Perhaps this has been going on for some time causing effort and exhaustion. This is where therapy can help. I offer genuine warmth, understanding, and togetherness whether your first time or returning to therapy. We can look at where you are now and how you got there. How it effects and affects you.

Life can feel complicated at times. Therapy can be helpful in providing a trusting and consistence space in which you can begin to make sense of your world. Art is a powerful and safe tool that can bring awareness to those hidden parts of ourself that we may find hard to recognise. Art can also help us to express those feelings which words cannot and begin to gain clarity. I work collaboratively with people to better understand themselves, regain autonomy, enhance confidence and work towards creating awareness and fulfilment in their life and relationships.

At times of difficulty it can be helpful to explore your concerns with a trained practitioner and consider possible solutions in a safe and confidential setting. The focus of therapeutic work is centred on your experience, helping you to clarify the issues that are troubling you, your thoughts and feelings and enabling you to find solutions. This work can provide a way forward and help at times of crisis when difficulties can be extreme, such as depression and anxiety. It can also be helpful when there is a lack of enjoyment of life or recurring difficulties in relationships. Counselling can bring you a greater awareness of choice.

I offer a warm, non judgemental space which allows you to examine issues around health and stress, relationships, anxiety, workplace issues, self confidence, trauma and stuck behavioural patterns. I work consistently with clients on issues around addictive behaviours and work with individuals and groups in recovery from alcohol and drug abuse. No problem is ever too small and it is often the ones you feel embarrassed to bring that are key to unlocking the problem.

The 'everyday experiences of life' can present many challenges. It can be valuable to take time to talk about feelings of anxiety, low mood, anger, worry or relational issues, or habits or behaviours that you would like to move on from. I am committed to helping people develop and achieve what is important to them, in accordance with their values and beliefs. Talking can help us to climb up above an issue and look down on it, like viewing the terrain of our lives from a high vantage point. This new perspective can suggest new ways round obstacles and new ways forwards.

I strive to meet all my clients with unconditional positive regard, with compassion and empathy. I work alongside my clients to nurture a space where they feel they can bring all of themselves, and meet even the most painful or shamed parts without judgment or criticism.

I am an integrative therapist that qualified in 2008. I’ve worked with a range of clients with diverse presenting issues. I also have 16 years experience of working with adults presenting with historic, childhood sexual abuse. I have a passion to help those who feel defeated, but haven't quite learnt the tools to overcome. Finding the right counsellor can seem a bit overwhelming. This is why the counselling relationship is very important to me and is key in helping to achieve your goals. I initially use the Person Centred approach to create a safe, non-judgemental, contained, therapeutic space for you and will work at your pace.

Dissociative Disorders (DID) Counsellors

How does therapy for dissociative disorders work?

Dissociation may be triggered by stress or other upsetting circumstances, and therapy can address the traumatic events at the core of an individual’s dissociation. Understanding why a person may dissociate can help the therapist and the individual come up with alternative methods of coping. A person with a dissociative disorder may get stuck on negative thinking, for example, and treatment like Cognitive behavioural therapy is a gold standard for breaking such thinking. And dialectical behaviour therapy, for example, can help a person manage their anguish through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for dissociative disorders?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioural, dialectical behaviour, psychodynamic, schema therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioural and dialectical behaviour therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful memories and past traumas. These therapies work to integrate an individual's different identities into one person.

Are there specific medications for dissociation?

There are no specific medications prescribed for dissociative disorders. However, psychosis, depression, anxiety, and/or panic often co-occur in dissociative disorders. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for any accompanying symptom which may include antipsychotics, antidepressants, or anti-anxiety drugs.

How often and how long are therapy sessions?

Like any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. There are still other patients, especially those who have co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, who may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months.
