I use a range of evidence based therapeutic interventions drawn from cognitive behavioural therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, compassion focussed therapy, and dialectical behavioural therapy as well as considering lifestyle factors.
Do you feel as if your mental health is out of balance at the moment? Do you feel a general sense of isolation and unhappiness? Life in today's world is challenging and there are times when stress and life events get on top of us and we feel overwhelmed and unable to cope. Perhaps I can help you to manage or overcome your difficulties - whether they are due to circumstances or a particular mental health issue such as an anxiety disorder or low mood. I aim to help you restore balance, manage life's challenges, and live a harmonious and fulfilling life that reflects your personal values. You don't have to struggle alone.

I'm passionate about providing ideas, activities & strategies & draw upon dialectical behavioural techniques (DBT) among other things to help regulate & calm the nervous system in a safe environment where you can be heard.
You may be struggling to cope with every day life, feeling overwhelmed with anxiety & dread social situations that take up your energy, resulting in you feeling there is no hope. Relationships may feel unhealthy, difficult & problematic, or like you just don’t fit in, and this can be within our families, our friendships, in the school environment, in the work place & beyond. Changes & transitions may feel too much & stop you from living the life that you want where you may feel stuck & dissatisfied, & trauma may prevent you from feeling at peace.

I also have knowledge of DBT and Mindfulness and may draw on these should they be relevant to our work together.
Currently I have availability for group, not for 1-2-1. Hi, my name’s Ed, I’m a Therapist working in Twickenham, West London, and online nationally. I work with people experiencing a wide range of difficulties from many different backgrounds, everyone’s story and reason for coming to therapy are different but all are equal. I offer both long and short term individual therapy, generally the length of therapy is something that we would discuss in our first session. In the case of longer term therapy we would frequently review as the therapy progresses to consider what work remains and when might it be appropriate to conclude therapy.

Dialectical Behaviour (DBT) Counsellors

Who is DBT for?

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.

Why do people need DBT?

The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behaviour and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.

What happens in DBT?

Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behaviour, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.

How long does DBT last?

Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioural change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behaviour; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
